Job Description

POSITION: Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist

Unit A Collective Bargaining Agreement

Reports to: Assistant Superintendent of Student Support

JOB GOAL:To provide prevention psycho educational individual and group counseling in substance abuse and mental health to students grade 612 at one or more sites.


RESPONSIBILITIES:
l. Provide prevention and psycho educational seminars as requested by teachers health educators and health coordinator on weekly basis in area of substance abuse and mental
health.
2. Counsel individuals and small groups of students experiencing alcohol and other drug abuse and dependence problems.
3 Conduct assessment and provide appropriate referral for students experiencing or at risk for alcohol and other use problems.
4.Coordinate services with building level Student Assistant Teams
5.Organize and facilitates group sessions for students returning to school from substance abuse treatment programs.
6.Identify and involve community resources in planning and utilizing their services in
program activities.
7.Maintain a complete resource directory of alcohol and other drug abuse intervention mental health treatment and support services.
8.Spearhead and facilitate after school smoke cessation. drug and alcohol use and abuse/mental health issues seminars as outlined by the health coordinator
9.Maintain files and a database on services provided
10.Complete annual substance abuse survey using national standards in grades 612. I I. Provide educational expertise and information on all substance abuse and mental health issues as targeted.
12.Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the Health & Human Services Coordinator or the Superintendent of Schools.
13.Receive and participate in weekly supervision with a certified CADAC supervisor.
*Must be available after school hours for intervention/support groups for teachers/staff
(Flex time apply to accommodate time requirements.

OUALIFICATIONS:
1.Licensed Social Worker or licensed mental health counselor.

2.Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADAC) or working towards certification.
3.Experience in a school or social service agency working with atrisk schoolaged children and youth.
4.Experience working and developing a comprehensive alcohol and drug abuse program.
5.Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the health coordinator and superintendent deem appropriate toward certification/licensure.
