Standard Work Hours: Mon Fri 8:15 am 4:30 pm 36.25 hours per week

Salary Range: $59361 $77168 per annum

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to Senior Director Student Affairs the Student Advocate provides support to students facing academic and nonacademic challenges by offering information guidance and advocacy and acts as the AssociateViceProvosts designate on the relevant Senate Committees. This position works closely with the Registrars Office the Office of the University Secretary academic faculties colleagues across Student Affairs and other university offices to ensure students receive fair treatment and appropriate support.

  • Advise students on their rights responsibilities and university policies.
  • Assist students in developing action plans to address academic and nonacademic concerns.
  • Guide students through conflict resolution and complaint processes.
  • Help students prepare for academic or disciplinary hearings including appeals.
  • Support students in navigating medical and compassionate withdrawal processes.
  • Guide students through course withdrawals or fulluniversity withdrawal procedures.
  • Advocate for students at academic appeals disciplinary hearings and related meetings.
  • Mediate conflicts or act as a spokesperson on behalf of students when appropriate.
  • Ensure fair treatment and due process for students throughout academic and disciplinary proceedings.
  • Interpret and clarify university rules regulations and policies related to academic standing discipline appeals and withdrawals.
  • Educate students on their academic rights and responsibilities through individual advising and workshops.
  • Design and deliver outreach initiatives to increase student awareness of advocacy services.
  • Advocate for and contribute to the development of new university policies and the review of existing ones ensuring they align with and support student success.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student cases and interactions.
  • Process relevant forms and paperwork including appeals and withdrawal requests.
  • Manage the transition of the office from a largely paperbased system to a casemanagement software solution.
  • Prepare reports annually and as required.
  • Oversee web content and contribute to social media presence to promote advocacy resources.
  • Develop and conduct regular assessments of student satisfaction with the Advocates Office.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Masters degree required.
  • Minimum 5 years of directly related experience.
  • Previous experience working with students.

Additional Strengths

  • Experience in postsecondary teaching is an asset.
  • Background in student advocacy conflict resolution and/or academic advising is beneficial.
  • Strong interpersonal and consensusbuilding skills experience with conflict resolution.
  • Highquality written and oral interpersonal communications skills.
  • High level of accountability and excellent judgment decision making and organizational skills.
  • Strong ability to manage multiple priorities and complex tasks.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.
  • Proficiency with Databases and Office 365 software.
  • Mental health training (supporting students in crisis and fostering a supportive environment) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures is an asset.
  • Collaborative leadership communication and consensusbuilding skills.
  • A naturally curious collaborative professional with an interest in trying new ways of doing things adopting new technologies continuous improvement and lifelong learning.
