1.High school diploma or equivalent.
2.Must be at least 18 years of age.
3.Successful completion of an accredited Pharmacy technician training program is highly desirable or completed 500 hours of employment as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee.
4.Must be a registered Pharmacy Technician with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy or a registered Pharmacy Intern with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.
5.Must be a Board Certified Pharmacy Technician from a nationally approved technician certification board within one year of employment.
6.Must maintain the title Certified Pharmacy Technician with a nationally recognized certificate from an accredited certifying organization or be a registered Pharmacy Intern with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy. Effective January 2013.
7.Must complete annual Continuing Education credits as required by the certifying body to maintain Certification.
8.Familiarity with medical terminology abbreviations and computer technology is required.
9.Must complete annual BWH Pharmacy Technician Competency Assessment Exam.
10.Upon departmental orientation and annually thereafter must complete annual mandatory training which includes:
a. Safety Training
OSHA/Fire Safety
Infection control
Safe handling of chemotherapeutic agents
b. Annual Competency Assessments
Automated Dispensing Machines
Laws and Regulations
Dosage calculations
Identification of dosages routes and storage requirements
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
1.Command of the English language.

3.Must be able to work accurately under stress with time constraints.
4.Above average communication skills and knowledge of Pharmacy policies and procedures is essential.

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under the direction of a Staff Pharmacist and/or Certified Technician Specialist follows established policies and procedures to perform a variety of routine technical and clerical support tasks that are integral to the operation of the Pharmacy department. Tasks include preparation of unit dose medications outpatient prescriptions intravenous admixtures stock orders control substances and investigational drug services.
These tasks are designed to assist the Pharmacist in the preparation and delivery of pharmaceutical supplies and medications in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Board of Registration in Pharmacy Department of Public Health and other regulatory agency as applicable. Most tasks require the review and authorization of a licensed Pharmacist.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Perform all required pharmaceutical dosage calculations necessary to prepare nonsterile extemporaneous dosage forms under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
2.Assist in the dispensing of medications to nursing units for immediate patient use using barcode verification to ensure accurate dispensing of mediations.
3.Perform medication deliveries to nursing units and return unused medications to Pharmacy to be credited. All deliveries and returns employ barcode verification technology.
4.Utilize Partners Information Systems and computer technologies for the Pharmacy and other hospital departments by printing reports labels and forms.
5.Assist in dispensing and maintaining appropriate records for investigational medications.
6.Inventory replenish and maintain the organization of medications and supplies in Pharmacy areas including Omnicell cabinets.
7.Receive check and store pharmaceutical supplies and medications that have been ordered from pharmaceutical manufacturers and drug wholesalers when directed.
8.Fill medication requisitions for all hospital clinics procedural areas and emergency department.
9.Perform floor inspections of nursing areas as assigned.
10. Prepare prescriptions for home use for ambulatory patients employees or discharge patients.
11. Assist in the maintenance of all automated technologies and other equipment.
12. Answer the phone; provide information and triage calls to the appropriate individual within pharmacy department.
13. Maintain clean and organized work areas.
14. Perform medication expiration date checking as assigned.
15. Perform delivery duties as required using barcode verification technology.
16. As required by State regulations wear a name tag with the individuals name and title Certified Pharmacy Technician.
17.All other duties as assigned.
