Chairperson Pediatrics

The Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (Katz) a nationally renowned medical institution and the Temple University Health System (TUHS)collectively called Temple Healthseeks a dynamic leader to serve as its next Chair of Pediatrics.

This individual will provide tactical direction and inspire excellence in clinical service education and academic development fostering an environment of growth and innovation. The new Chair will be deeply committed to serving an urban underserved population and oversee an academic primary care practice with fifteen providers across two sites. The new Chair will also lead hospitalist partnerships with St. Christophers Hospital for Children and provider staffing for the new Temple Women and Childrens Hospitals newborn nursery and neonatal intensive care unit. In all these clinical endeavors the Chair will work closely with the Dean of Katz to ensure highquality clinical rotations for medical students and other learners.

The Chair of Pediatrics will foster a culture of respect institutional stewardship and community engagement. With a strong leadership and program development foundation the ideal candidate will bring demonstrated experience in fiscal and administrative management. The successful Chair will have a proven track record in clinical care education and research with expertise in strategic planning faculty recruitment and development operational management and resource allocation. As a leader the Chair will guide the Department to uphold the highest standards of excellence and inclusivity. Key responsibilities will include expanding the Departments clinical presence to deliver exceptional care to underserved populations pursuing new business opportunities and partnerships recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty and staff driving scholarly activity and medical education programs. Additionally the Chairperson will ensure that the Department meets or exceeds the quality performance metrics set for hospitalbased and outpatient care by TUHS.

The ideal candidate will deeply understand emerging trends in healthcare medical education population health and research. The Chair will be skilled in building and nurturing key internal and external partnerships to ensure the Departments work is aligned with Temple Healths broader goals and meets the needs of faculty staff and students. The Chair will work collaboratively with department members to ensure the delivery of equitable highquality care to Temples community. This commitment reflects the principles laid out by the Universitys founding President Dr. Russell Conwell more than a century ago.

Specific Responsibilities

• Develop and execute a strategic plan for the Department that aligns with the Katz and Temple Faculty Physician strategic plan. The plan should address the following five areas of responsibility: Clinical Care Educational Mission (medical students other professional students residents and fellows faculty and outreach CME) Faculty Mentoring (promotion clinical educational and research productivity) Research (grant support publications presentations) and Administrative.
• Create an environment of professionalism respect tolerance and belonging for all.
• Create and execute strategies to engage with local communities building trust and fostering partnerships.
• In conjunction with the School of Medicines Faculty Affairs and Education units create programs for faculty academic and professional development.
• Manage the resources of the departments clinical research and educational enterprise prudently and effectively.
• Communicate effectively and frequently with leadership and the faculty and staff to ensure that strategies and activities of the department enterprise are aligned with the organizations mission vision and goals.
• Develop a plan for recruiting supporting and mentoring faculty. Participate in faculty career development plans and retention efforts. Provide an annual evaluation of all department faculty. Make recommendations on faculty appointments promotions and tenure.
• Provide administrative direction and supervision to the departments faculty and staff.
• Plan effectively for the anticipated demand for clinical services from expanding patient volumes ensuring sufficient facilities technologies operations staffing and outreach activities.
• Ensure that clinical operations are patientcentered efficient effective high quality and safe.
• Advance research activities consistent with the growth of clinical programs.

Educational Requirements and Minimum Qualifications

This position requires an MD or equivalent. Qualified candidates must be boardcertified in their Pediatrics and qualified for an academic appointment at the rank of full professor (preferred) in the medical school. They must have an outstanding clinical care research scholarship and mentoring/education record. Candidates with additional pertinent degrees (Ph.D. M.B.A. and M.P.H. and/or fellowship training are encouraged to apply. Candidates will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal organizational and problemsolving skills. Lastly candidates should be active participants in specialty organizations/committees at the regional and national levels and can obtain medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Annual compensation shall be determined based on the selected individuals experience and qualifications. In 2015 Temple University School of Medicine was renamed the Lewis Katz School of Medicine in honor of Temple alumnus former trustee and philanthropist Lewis Katz. Temple Faculty Physicians comprises more than 500 dually employed physicians who are the cornerstone of clinical care and teaching for Temples healthcare enterprise. These physicians practice in 20 academic departments encompassing every subspecialty in modern medicine.
