GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Physician Assistant (PA) will serve as a PA for the Division and will assist the attending physicians in all areas of patient care in Trauma Burn and Surgical Critical Care including in the Emergency Department the inpatient units the operating room and the outpatient clinic.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Duties:
The PA should display the following skills and take part in the following tasks:
1.Performs patient admitting histories and physicals; records information accurately in patient record in a timely fashion.
2.Assists attending surgeons in the operating room with surgical procedures.
3.Assists in the resuscitation and management of trauma patients.
4.Performs routine preoperative and postoperative procedures e.g.: insertion/removal of tubes lines sutures; performs postoperative wound care.
5.Examines and evaluates patients and assists in development of their treatment plan with resident physicians and attending surgeons. Follows up with patients in the outpatient clinic after discharge.
6.Appropriately responds to emergency situations; manages patient issues as they arise to the extent that the PA will obtain and evaluate studies/labs write orders obtain consultations and interpret lab values and xrays with the assistance of the supervising physicians as necessary.
7.Provides age specific care to acute care surgery patients from adolescence through the geriatric ages.
8.Will work with physician trainees and will alternate with them in scheduled shifts for patient care.
9.Will work under the direction of supervising acute care surgery attending and fellows.
10.Provides teaching to medical students and physician assistant students and other health care personnel as appropriate.
11.Stays up to date on the latest literature in acute care surgery practice.
12.Participates in quality improvement efforts and research efforts as directed by the service leadership. The PA should also initiate quality improvement and research efforts as appropriate.
NonClinical Duties:

b.Maintain awareness of documentation and its effect on reimbursement.
c.Continue to find ways to practice efficiently
d.Advocate for quality of care
e.Partner with attendings and other care providers to provide high quality patient care.
While PAs can expect their work schedules to be relatively predictable planned far enough in advance whenever possible they should also expect variation in their schedules as needed to cover the clinical needs as they become apparent to the department/division/clinics. PAs may be asked to pick up additional shifts as needed to work nights and weekends and to provide backup coverage all as part of their work expectations in this job.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1.License/Certification/Registration:
a.NCCPA certified.
b.License as a Physician Assistant in Massachusetts.
c.Maintain current DEA and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Licenses.
d.Complete 100 hours of CME according to national and state regulations during each 2year period of employment.
e.Complete BWH Professionalism Program within 3 months of date of hire.
f.Complete Advanced Trauma Life Support within 6 months of date of hire.
2.Education:
a.Master of Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited program approved by the AMA Board of Approval and Certification of PA programs.
SKILLS ABILITIES & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
The PA shall demonstrate the following clinical knowledge skills and competencies:
1.Clinical skills and knowledge as well as professionalism of the PA candidate are assessed by an acute care surgery attending under the direction of the Division Chief.
2.If a candidate does not pass the competency assessment acute care surgery attendings will provide feedback on additional development needs. Reassessment is possible after 6 months of focused development.
3.Competencies are assessed by acute care surgery attendings either through direct observation or verbal communication. The attending physician(s) performing the assessment will complete a competency assessment (designed by dept/division). The candidate is responsible to provide example cases which he or she has cared for patients with the most common diagnosis.
Physical and mental abilities required:
1.Must be energetic quality driven and have proven ability to be a productive member of a cohesive team of peers dedicated to providing optimum patient care.
2.Must exercise the highest degree of professional judgment under the direct supervision and guidance of a licensed physician.
3.Must maintain a professional attitude towards patients and exercise such mature independent originality in solving problems not covered by existing guidelines within legal limits to meet the needs of the patients.
4.Must maintain a professional attitude towards patients at all times and an excellent and collegial working relationship with other personnel involved in patient care.
5.Must demonstrate understanding of procedures policies and documentation required to ensure compliance with hospital standards of care.
The PA shall demonstrate the following professional knowledge and skills:
1.Proficient with BWH computer systems as needed to independently perform daily tasks such as order entry EMAR lab tests and results incident reporting etc.
2.Consistently provide high quality and timely documentation including admission notes progress notes discharge summaries and dictation.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work areas will include the BWH inpatient outpatient and affiliated areas of patient care (diagnostic units Emergency Medicine Department postoperative care unit or any other areas where care is delivered for BWH trauma burn and surgical critical care patients).
