Job Description

POSITION TITLE: School Security Officer REPORTS TO: (As assigned per Org. Chart). DEPARTMENT: Facilities & Operation CATEGORY: Classified

CONTRACT TERM: Ten Months 10 CLASSIFICATION: NonExempt

JOB SUMMARY: Security Officer Position is who is tactful caring and looking for the opportunity to protect students. The Security Officer will monitor school grounds and student housing during the school day and during extracurricular activities. This position will also assist law enforcement officers and serve as a liaison between law enforcement students and parents as needed. Hopi Junior/Senior High School is committed to helping all students develop skills in the areas of personalsocial growth educational planning and career and vocational development.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Patrols school campus in order to protect students and staff as well as school property. Patrols school activities as directed by supervisor. Assists administrator in charge of a schoolsponsored activity to which security officer has been assigned to maintain order thus protecting students and staff members from harm and schoolowned property from loss or damage caused by antisocial acts. Watches for unauthorized vehicles vehicles without proper parking authorization or vehicles parked in restricted areas.
  2. Manages incidents with persons who have no legitimate purpose for being on campus. Courteously requests that they leave and takes such individuals who refuse to leave to appropriate school authorities or police. May need to apprehend and/or restrain individuals who become belligerent in a manner which minimizes harm to students the subject being apprehended and oneself. Engages in physical contact only when absolutely unavoidable and/or when in the interest of the safety and welfare of the subject or persons in the immediate area.
  3. Maintains telephone radio and walkietalkie communications with supervisor other administrative personnel and Hopi Police when the situation warrants it.
  4. Works with Law Enforcement officials as directed by supervisor. Serves as liaison between law enforcement and students and parents.
  5. Maintains detailed records of security incidents.
  6. Assists Principals in searching for students who did not return to their homes after school.
  7. Evaluates the security program on a regular basis and makes recommendations for improvements to the supervisor.
  8. Maintains equipment issued by the school.
  9. Attends safety and other meetings as instructed by supervisor.
  10. Conducts duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Hopi Junior/Senior High School Governing Board Policies and Procedures.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  1. Knowledge of basic principles of security measures and techniques.
  2. Knowledgeable of or training of methods used for safeguarding information property students personnel operations and materials.
  3. Demonstrated skills in dealing with people in difficult circumstances with considerable tact.
  4. Professional verbal and written communication skills in English; ability to instruct and maintain emotional control under stress
  5. Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationship with others.
  6. Knowledge of general school site rules and policy.
  7. Knowledge of Governing Board rules of conduct and policy.
  8. Skill in communicating orally and in writing.
  9. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others requiring the ability to interact professionally and courteously with students faculty staff and the public.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent required.
  2. One to two years of security experience in school environment setting or security entity.
  3. First aid and CPR certification.
  4. Valid AZ State Drivers License

PREFERRED QUAILIFICATIONS:

  1. Hopi/Indian Preference in employment considered.
  2. Valid State Driver Licenses.
  3. Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  4. Must successfully pass employment background checks within the last five years which include state federal and local tribe.

INDIAN PREFERENCE POLICY: Hopi/Indian preference in employment will be practiced in accordance to the Hopi Tribe any person who is presently an enrolled member of the Hopi Tribe. Shall mean that in selection process Indian candidates who meet or surpass qualifications for a position shall be given preference for positions established by the Governing Board.
