Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT

Reports directly to the Operations Manager provide direct supervision to one assistant and all mechanics for the OHM shifts including electricians plumbers HVAC and PM who assure the uninterrupted flow of utilities and the continuous operation of the plants mechanical systems during off hours. Must possess strong interpersonal skills and provide an environment within the shop to enable initiative and inspire creativity. Working with the asst foreman manage and measure performance and productivity within the shop. Look at the processes and procedures and recommend and implement changes. Ensure that the work environment is clean functional and in a safe condition. Ensure that safety and work rules and procedures are followed. Perform record keeping timekeeping and submit reports required by regulatory agencies for the department.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1 Recommend hiring and discharge of personnel within departmental and human resources guidelines.

2 Assure that all personnel receive orientation onthejob training and retraining as new systems are put on line or existing systems are upgraded.

3 Evaluate and recommend changes and procedures in reference to new and existing equipment.

4 Control tools/inventory in order to assure their availability to get the job done and accountability to prevent wastes abuse.

5 Meets daily with mechanical shops foremen/assistant foremen oversees logkeeping work orders to ensure good communications between all shifts.

6 Oversees operation and maintenance of air filtration equipment to provide maximum efficiency and air quality.

7 Works on the PM system to ensure that data for the equipment maintained is current and accurate.

8 Staff the offhour shifts with the appropriate mix of personnel to maintain both the physical plant and provide excellent service to endusers.

9 Must be on call 24 hours a day seven days a week. Carries an MGH cell phone 24/7 to be capable of being reached in the event of emergencies.

10 Responds to emergency situations as necessary and appropriate.

11 Is subject to call at any time for emergency to hospital facilities. Must know hospital emergency procedures regarding disaster fire and utility failures and be able to assist in accordance with established hospital practice and special training.

12 Keeps superiors informed of productivity and efficiency of unit regular workload staffing requirements with recommendations for additions and/or deletions as needed and training requirements.

13 a) Visits all work sites regularly to ensure work is progressing. b) provides technical assistance as necessary c) ensures compliance with appropriate codes and d) inspects all completed work.

14 Participates in the development of new training programs in the OHMS.

15 Ensure compliance with all codes and regulations (i.e. building codes fire codes federal and state agency).

16 Responsible for preventive maintenance of multiple systems and devices.

17 Perform other duties as assigned.

18 Completes the weekly time records for timekeeping.

19 Completes annual performance evaluations in a timely manner.

20 Develops programs for shop training such as ICRA ILSM and containment procedures.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises licensed mechanics 17 FTEs

WORK CONDITIONS

1 Frequent exposure to extreme dust dirt fumes and outside elements throughout Hospital equipment areas.

2 Occasional exposure to moderately severe hazards of steam water acids tool usage electricity asbestos biohazard and low level radiation; however compliance with safety procedures minimizes risks.

3 Subject to call any time for emergency; Responds to problems as required of all trades when working offhour shifts.

4 Compliance with Hospital rules and standards universal precaution procedures to minimize risks; compliance with hospital and department rules on uniforms; also requires the use of safety equipment such as respirator safety glasses etc. on specific job assignments.

5 The plants mechanical systems have direct impact on both the hospitals caregivers and patients. This places a most serious responsibility on this position.


1 Completion of a high school or equivalent; possession of Valid Master license in the state of Massachusetts in either Electricity Plumbing or a HVAC Technician license or acquire within 3 5 years.

2 Requires 8 years industrial experience supplemented by at least 3 years of concurrent supervisory experience.

3 Knowledge of mechanics tool usage pneumatics; must also be able to read blueprints.

4 Physical ability to climb stairs ladders and walk almost constantly. Occasionally is required to work in confined areas. Occasionally (less than 15 of the time) must exert effort to lift over seventy pounds.

5 Interpersonal skills to exchange information with other shops personnel about work needed to provide onthejob training and to conduct formal skillbuilding training classes.

6 Computer skills necessary; ability to innovate analyze objectively.

7 Works unsupervised and refers to higher management only on matters of exception for clarification of policies and procedures.

8 Failure to perform associated duties could significantly disrupt the operation of the Hospital.
