Main Purpose of Job
Substitute teaching assignments may change based on the needs of the school. A substitute teacher may be asked to accept assignments outside his/her background or educational training. They may also be asked to cover classes during a planning period. It is not expected that a substitute teacher be able to teach new or unfamiliar materials but rather make every attempt to follow the lesson plan and manage student behavior in the most positive way possible.
POSITION DUTIES
Follow the lesson plan left by the teacher and ensure students completeall assigned tasks maintain a safe environment keep students under directsupervision at all times leave information concerning the days activities forthe teacher and maintain strict confidentiality of students and schoolpersonnel information.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School diplomaplus 60 college credits or a verified former Howard Countyteacher.
Fluency in American Sign Language and written Englishrequired.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree preferred.Experienceworking with a diverse student population including underserved studentsstrong classroom management skills and knowledge of the Deaf Communitypreferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee you will be responsible for paying 25 of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75 of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage accidental death and dismemberment insurance and life insurance but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
