About the Position

The Coast Community College District Information Technology Department is seeking a Full Time IT User Support Technician. This is a permanent general funded fulltime 12months per year classified position. The normal hours of work will be Monday to Thursday 8:00 am 5:00 pm and Friday 7:00 am 4:00 pm. This position will be based at Orange Coast College but also supports any of our District/College sites per the needs of the department. . The ideal candidate will provide technical support to users ensuring prompt resolution of hardware software network and user account related issues. This role requires strong communication skills problemsolving abilities and a commitment to delivering excellent customer service. Summary
Installs configures troubleshoots and services networked computer workstations and related equipment and software used in administrative classroom and lab environments. Provides technical support and help functions that relate to computer hardware and software data communications and connectivity.

Distinguishing Career Features
The IT User Support Technician is an intermediate level in a career ladder encompassing workstation network and applications support. The User Support Technician is capable of basic network operations account setup applying existing computer security and user access rules and hardware diagnostics; however concentrates on supporting networked and standalone workstations and commonly used administrative and educational software. The User Support Technician Senior is capable of network operations account setup applying existing computer security and user access rules conducting training and hardware diagnostics; however concentrates on supporting networked and standalone workstations and common administrative applications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties may vary among departments divisions and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties as assigned:
1. Aids staff and faculty on utilizing computer and software programs including remote access and on the proper use of audiovisual or electronic equipment.
2. Receives and resolves advanced user help desk calls. Documents calls forwarding work order requests to other technology staff.
3. Troubleshoots and performs various technical computer and peripheral repair duties that include but are not limited to diagnosing system failures and isolating faulty parts repairing or replacing parts and verifying and testing for correct operations.
4. Provides basic technical support to enterprise software systems supporting networked computers such as computer system updates virtual environments and multimedia systems.
5. Installs and configures networked computer users e.g. computers printers modems cabling and peripheral communications equipment. Installs software and configures systems to support electronic mail. Troubleshoots email access problems.
6. Participates in troubleshooting to resolve hardware and operations problems including but not limited to connectivity internet access electronic mail and file servers. Works with fellow staff equipment users and vendors to identify and resolve problems.
7. Assists with updates to existing security software on networks and workstations. Tests existing systems and personal computers for potential viruses and security problems.
8. Configures software to communicate with peripherals such as printers scanners and display monitors.
9. Performs new workstation hardware installs including software imaging user data backups transfers and restores.
10. Develops and maintains uptodate documentation supporting assigned and related areas of responsibility. This includes procedures and steps for equipment setup help desk questions and answers and inventory records.
11. Responsible for setup configuration and operation of multimedia equipment used in offices meeting rooms and special events.
12. Assists with maintaining classroom and conference room audio visual presentation systems and interface with vendors to ensure timely repair and return to service.
13. Participates in receiving labeling tagging and location tracking of District technology assets. Assists with audit activities to validate the existence and location of assets.
14. May assist and provide backup support to the Help Desk by phone or inperson.
15. Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
16. Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 Code of Professional Ethics.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills
1. Requires technical knowledge of configuring and supporting end user devices. End user devices are defined as the hardware operating system and application layers on devices such as workstations laptops handheld devices printers wireless phones portable learning devices and audiovisual multimedia gear.
2. Requires a working knowledge of WindowsTM and AppleTM operating systems.
3. Must understand the protocols and procedures for setting up new equipment troubleshooting and performing routine maintenance.
4. Requires a working knowledge of local area networks for personal computers and connectivity between servers.
5. Requires a basic knowledge of protocols such as TCP/IP Serial Ethernet and Access Lists.
6. Requires a basic understanding of the physical elements of the network including cabling and connections and routing switching and repeating equipment.
7. Requires working knowledge of highvolume document copying equipment.
8. Requires enough human relations skills to provide individual training and technical assistance on the use of PCbased software for business internet utility and connectivity.
9. Requires enough writing skills to document technical procedures.

Abilities
1. Requires the ability to perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the position.
2. Requires the ability to install configure and troubleshoot networked computer workstations systems and programs used by the County Office in departmentspecific education and general administrative areas.
3. Must be able to install and configure computer components such as but not limited to cards and drives.
4. Must be able to fabricate and connect interface cables and connections between computers.
5. Must be able to analyze data evaluate the needs of users and develop the alternative solutions to problems and needs.
6. Must be able to prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines and timetables.
7. Must be able to read interpret and apply complex technical information including equipment and network diagrams.
8. Must be able to give oneonone and small group training in the use of microcomputers and business and instructional software.
9. Requires the ability to be timely in customer service responses.

Physical Abilities
1. The general physical demands working conditions and essential job functions associated with this classification will be kept on file with the Office of Human Resources.

Education and Experience
The position requires the equivalent to an Associates degree in computer science or related technical field and 2 years of experience in technical support to computer workstations and connectivity to networks. Industry certificates (e.g. A) may substitute for some higher education or experience. Or any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.

Licenses and Certificates
Requires a valid driver license and the ability to transport equipment to and from work sites.

Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors where some safety considerations exist from physical labor positioning in cramped areas and handling of medium weight yet awkward materials.

This is an INHOUSE ONLY permanent general funded fulltime 12months per year classified position.
