Job Description

Midwestern University (MWU) is excited to offer a oneyear internship focused on Small Animal Internal Medicine. This program is intended to provide intensive clinical training and faculty mentorship to prepare the intern for the rigors of an internal medicine residency. The Midwestern University Companion Animal Clinic is a modern and innovative veterinary hospital for small animals. The 110000 sq. ft. building contains stateoftheart surgical dental and intensive care facilities and is equipped with digital radiography fluoroscopy Carm 32slice CT ultrasound endoscopy laparoscopy and arthroscopy facilities. Additional services include dialysis medicine therapeutic plasma exchange and a blood bank.

The intern will work primarily with Drs. Jared Jaffey and Laura Rayhel. The internal medicine service runs five days per week under the supervision of one of these faculty members on an alternating basis. The IM specialty intern can expect to see approximately 4 outpatient cases per day covering a wide range of possible internal medicine case subtypes. Additionally the IM intern will manage selected inpatient transfers from the Urgent Care Primary Care and Surgery Services including (but not limit to): immunemediated thrombocytopenia and hemolytic anemia diabetic ketoacidosis acute kidney injury acute pancreatitis etc. The intern will work with close and individualized supervision from the onclinics faculty member. There are no evening overnight or weekend oncall responsibilities or emergency receiving duties required. Elective rotations in other specialty areas are possible if specifically requested.

The IM intern will receive training in and primarily perform a variety of minimally invasive and endoscopic procedures including gastroduodenoscopy gastric foreign body retrieval ileocolonoscopy cystoscopy laser ablation of ectopic ureters rhinoscopy bronchoscopy/bronchoalveolar lavage arthrocentesis bone marrow sampling enteral feeding tube placement and more. On a casebycase basis MWU is outfitted to perform hemodialysis therapeutic plasma exchange and tracheal stenting. The internal medicine service is also responsible for providing abdominal thoracic and cervical ultrasonography services and fine needle aspirate procedures for its own patients and patients on other services so onthejob handson and frequent training in sonography will also be provided.
