Job Description

Position Summary:

The SSAS School Liaison for Afghan Families and Youth plays a critical role in fostering a welcoming and supportive educational environment for Afghan students and their families eligible for this grant funded program. This position focuses on building strong relationships facilitating communication and providing culturally sensitive support to ensure the academic success and overall wellbeing of Afghan students within the school system. The Liaison serves as a bridge between eligible families schools and community resources addressing the unique needs and challenges faced by newly arrived Afghan families.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Family Engagement and Communication:
    • Establish and maintain strong trusting relationships with SSAS eligible Afghan families serving as a primary point of contact.
    • Facilitate effective communication between families and school staff including teachers counselors and administrators using culturally appropriate methods and when necessary language translation.
    • Provide culturally sensitive support and guidance to families regarding school policies procedures and expectations.
    • Organize and facilitate workshops and meetings to educate families about the American education system school resources and student support services.
    • Actively listen to and address family concerns and advocate for their needs within the school system.
  • Student Support and Advocacy:
    • Assist with the enrollment screening and placement of newly arrived Afghan students ensuring a smooth transition into the school environment.
    • Explain academic attendance and behavioral expectations to students and families emphasizing the importance of regular school participation.
    • Meet with Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE) from Afghanistan and collaborate with teachers to develop individualized instructional plans that address their specific needs and learning gaps.
    • Monitor student attendance academic progress and socialemotional wellbeing identifying and addressing potential barriers to success.
    • Assist in ensuring Afghan students engage in a variety of academic programs extracurricular activities and special programs that support their overall success and integration.
    • Act as an advocate for Afghan students ensuring their cultural and linguistic needs are met within the school setting.
  • Community Collaboration and Resource Coordination:
    • Develop and maintain partnerships with community organizations social service agencies and cultural support groups that serve the Afghan community.
    • Connect families with relevant community resources including language services mental health support housing assistance and legal aid.
    • Facilitate access to resources that address the unique challenges faced by Afghan families such as trauma support and cultural adjustment.
  • Data Management and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate and confidential records related to Afghan student performance attendance and family engagement.
    • Assist in the collection and analysis of data to evaluate the effectiveness of support services and identify areas for improvement.
    • Prepare reports and presentations on the progress and needs of Afghan students and families.
  • Cultural Competency and Professional Development:
    • Maintain a deep understanding of Afghan culture traditions and the unique challenges faced by newly arrived families.
    • Participate in ongoing professional development to enhance cultural competency and knowledge of effective strategies for supporting EL students.
    • Perform related work as required.
