Job Description

Job Title: Principal (Elementary & Intermediate Schools) Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

SUMMARY:

Direct and manage overall campus operations. Responsible for leadership of the campus instructional program ensuring high standards of instruction and student achievement compliance with District policies application of instructional programs and effective operation of all campus activities.

  • Model KISD core organizational beliefs and values; perform duties effectively and efficiently for the purpose of supporting and contributing to high student achievement.
  • Provide program support and service delivery; communicate effectively within and across teams and participate in crossfunctional work groups.
  • Maintain a commitment to the District mission; model District expectations through personal leadership and actively support the efforts of others to achieve District goals.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Instructional Management

  • Monitor instructional processes to ensure that program activities are related to outcomes and use findings to take corrective actions where necessary.
  • Provide instructional resources and materials needed to accomplish instructional goals.
  • Establish clear expectations for staff performance with regard to instructional strategies classroom management and communication with the public.
  • Foster collegiality and team building among staff members. Encourage their active involvement in the decisionmaking process.
  • Solicit regular input from campuslevel committee about planning operation supervision and evaluation of campus education program. Include students and community representatives when appropriate.

School/Organizational Improvement

  • Build a common vision for school improvement with staff. Direct planning activities and implement programs to ensure attainment of schools mission.
  • Establish campus performance objectives for Academic Excellence Indicators using the campus planning process and involving sitebased decisionmaking committee. Demonstrate campus progress using results to promote school improvement.
  • Monitor educational equity by analyzing staffing patterns class scheduling formats school organizational structures student discipline practices and disaggregated student assessment data.
  • Ensure responsiveness to diverse sociological linguistic cultural and other factors that may affect students development and learning; ensure that quality differentiated instructional programs are provided to meet individual student needs.
  • Provide opportunities for interactive communication with superintendent staff students parents and the community.

Student Management

  • Act as campus behavioral coordinator in accordance with state laws and regulations.
  • Work with faculty and students to develop a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior and enhances the school climate.
  • Ensure that school rules are uniformly applied and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Conduct conferences about student and school issues with parents students and teachers.

Management of Fiscal Administrative and Facilities Function

  • Compile budgets and align resource allocation with district and campus goals and documented program needs; demonstrate responsible fiscal control over assigned campus budgets.
  • Comply with District policies state and federal laws and regulations affecting schools.
  • Develop and administer campus budgets based on documented program needs and estimated enrollment ensuring that operations are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
  • Compile maintain and file all reports records and other documents required including accurate and timely reports of maximum attendance to requisition textbooks.
  • Manage the use of school facilities. Oversee maintenance of facilities to ensure a clean orderly and safe campus.
  • Direct and manage extracurricular and intramural programs including management of multiple activity funds.

Personnel Management

  • Select train supervise and evaluate staff and make recommendations related to assignment retention discipline and dismissal. Approve all personnel assigned to campus.
  • Observe employee performance record observations and conduct evaluation conferences with staff.
  • Coach staff and help them identify and develop appropriate professional growth opportunities as well as accomplish improvement goals.
  • Work with campuslevel planning and decisionmaking committees to plan professional development activities.

School and Community Relations

  • Articulate the schools mission to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
  • Demonstrate awareness of school and community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs using appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.

Policy Reports and Law

  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Develop and maintain systems for retrieval of information in support of all programs; compile maintain file and secure all physical and computerized reports records and other required documents.
  • Pursue Professional Development activities for self and assigned staff; ensure that Professional Development activities are aligned with District goals and initiatives and current professional research.
  • Comply with all policies operating procedures legal requirements and verbal and written directives.
  • Comply with the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.
  • Follow District safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  • Masters degree
  • Valid Texas Principal or other appropriate Texas Certificate
  • Certified Texas Teacher Support and Evaluation System (TTESS) appraiser

Experience:

  • Two 2 years of successful campus administrative experience
  • Successful experience as an instructional leader
  • Three 3 years of successful classroom teacher experience

SPECIAL KNOWLEGDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of campus operations
  • Knowledge of the community and District
  • Working knowledge of learnercentered curriculum and instruction
  • Knowledge of TEA related rules regulations and procedures
  • Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures
  • Ability to interpret data
  • Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Supervise evaluate and recommend the hiring and termination of staff assigned to campus including assistant principal(s) teachers counselor(s) librarian(s) instructional aides clerical support staff and custodians.

MENTAL/PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

Tools/Equipment Used:

  • Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals

Posture:

  • Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Motion:

  • Repetitive hand motions frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching

Lifting:

  • Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
  • Occasional physical restraint of students to control behavior

Environment:

  • Work to be completed onsite from assigned school or building
  • Regular exposure to noise and computer monitors
  • Work inside and outside (exposure to sun heat cold and inclement weather)
  • No remote work
  • Occasional districtwide and statewide travel

Mental Demands:

  • Work with frequent interruptions
  • Maintain emotional control under stress work
  • Prolonged or irregular hours
