SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER OPEN POSITIONS:

  • Secondary Moderate Cognitive Impairment Program (CI required) Offsite program located in Mendon
  • Elementary Intensive Instructional Support Program (CI or AI endorsement preferred) Offsite program located in Mendon
  • Secondary Severe Multiple Impairments Program (CI endorsement required) Pathfinder
  • Elementary Intensive InstructionalSupport Program (CI or AI endorsement preferred) Pathfinder
  • Secondary 68 Intensive Instructional Support Program (CI or AI endorsement preferred) Pathfinder
  • Secondary Emotional Impairment Program (EI endorsement required) Offsite program located in Sturgiswith small class size following MARSE rules and additional resources to support student needs

POSITION GOAL:

To provide learning opportunities and experiences to students from Local School Districts throughout St. Joseph County. The goal of the teacher is to help the students achieve the maximum level of academic emotional and functional independence possible within their capabilities through development of a classroom program that meets the students needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Current Michigan Teachers Certificate.
  2. Special Education Endorsement.
  3. Meet Highly Qualified Standards.
  4. Responsibility of employee to obtain and maintain all training(s) certificate(s) approval(s) etc. and provide documentation to the business office before expiration date of said document(s).
  5. Must have regular and reliable job attendance performance and the physical ability to do the job.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop and work toward achievement of performance objectives for each assigned student with a system for data collection and evaluation for these objectives along with administering MSTEP and MIAccess.
  2. Demonstrate ability to instruct students individually and in groups based on knowledge of child growth and development and using multisensory techniques.
  3. Work as a team with assistant teachers to pursue and meet individual performance objectives collect student data and create an organized positive and safe classroom environment which maintains the dignity of the individual student.
  4. Evaluate revise and implement classroom curriculum.
  5. Maintain appropriate records (i.e. Accident forms medical Department of Human Services reports educational and attendance records).
  6. Involve students in communitybased instruction/activities and be responsible for student safety in community training/outings and IEP/as appropriate.
  7. Establish a positive relationship with parents and home providers and communicate with them regularly about growth progress problems and successes.
  8. Analyze student behavior develop and implement behavior supports as needed.
  9. Serve as a resource to parents of students with impairments providing information and/or contacts for support assistance or knowledge of their childs impairment.
  10. Serve as a member of the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team Individual Educational Planning Committee and program/department teams.
  11. Work cooperatively with ancillary staff office staff administration local district staff and community service agencies.
  12. Supervise assigned student teachers interns vocational students and volunteers.
  13. Demonstrate professional improvement through inservice attendance SCECHs or college credit and conference attendance.
  14. Prepare required reports and provide necessary information accurately and punctually.
  15. Identify program needs and assist in finding solutions for special education problems.
  16. Participate in activities and creating schedules for school wide events (i.e. organize distributing information and/or implementing an activity or event).
  17. Oversee and share information/knowledge with assistant teachers/program assistance.
  18. Maintain positive school/community relationships.
  19. Arrange efficient instructional schedules cooperatively with other instructional staff.
  20. Work on related service goals including Social Worker OT PT speech PE (throughout classroom routine).
  21. Have knowledge of other special education & general education programs for future transitions of students and assist with the transition process of students into other programs.
  22. Dispense and record student medications and communicate regularly with school nurse.
  23. Arrange transportation for communitybased instruction.
  24. Be responsible for classroom funds.
  25. Constantly monitor & evaluate the safety & well being of all students and report any concerns to the proper authorities.
  26. Perform other duties as assigned by the St. Joseph County ISD Administrators.

PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF THE JOB:

  1. Climb steps and playground equipment as needed.
  2. Walk long distances in communitybased instruction.
  3. Lift and position physically involved students.
  4. Physically assist with aggressive student behavior.
  5. Assist students in sports events (i.e. skiing winter field day track & field events).
  6. Assist with maintenance/custodial care of classroom.
  7. Assist with P.E. and swimming.
  8. Use universal precautions at all times for personal health and safety.
  9. Participate in yearly CPI CPR/AED and first aid training biyearly.
  10. Must be able to lift 30 pounds.
  11. Required to have a physical presence at the designated job site each scheduled work day.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary for this position is based on the IEA Master Agreement

This position includes a three year sign on bonus:

$2500: Year 1

$2000: Year 2

$1500: Year 3
