Description of Work

If you are looking for a rewarding career please consider the Correctional Training Specialist opportunity with the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. This is a fulltime position 40 hours per week) with State Benefits including health insurance paid vacation paid sick time paid holidays as well as retirement.

This position is located in the Randall Building Raleigh NC and reposts to the User Support Analyst.
  • Travel possibly with overnight stays will be required when training staff statewide at various locations including training sites and prisons.
  • This position promotes and supports the Offender Population Unified System (OPUS) by providing field staff the tools necessary to meet daytoday operations of the Division of InstitutionsPrisons.
  • Due to the complexity of OPUS this position is responsible for developing and managing large integrated software systems developing training programs promoting open communication teamwork and positive acceptance of change.
  • The candidate must demonstrate skills that show effective communication with instructors students and supervisors when formulating ideas and communicating in verbal and written form.
  • This position will structure and design materials to be utilized in training classes about all aspects of the OPUS system.
  • Training will focus on the understanding of correct documentation and how to properly navigate integrated processes crossing functional sections in both mainframe and webbased applications.
  • Position ensures training offered is designed to promote various computer applications and the need to understand and communicate the demand for accuracy in this technical environment.
  • This position assists Prisons OPUS Helpdesk by:
    • providing phone support to troubleshoot mainframe web applications and hardware related issues
    • serves as a Division Site Security Administrator for staff at all correctional facilities/prisons region offices maintenance yards and private substance abuse centers
    • participates in the research and implementation of OPUS enhancements and revisions to evaluate the future needs of the Division of InstitutionsPrisons.

As of January 1 2025 there are new increase adjustments to the states pay plans which were approved by the State Human Resources Commission effective January 1 2025. The new salary range will be $39671 $69426. Prior applicants will remain under consideration and do not need to reapply to be considered for this increase.

Note to Current State Employees: The Salary Grade for this position is NC09. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase/decrease MAY result.

The Dept. of Adult Correction is responsible for the care custody and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody healthcare and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration Compliance & Accreditation Comprehensive Health Services Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations PostRelease Supervision & Parole Commission and Rehabilitation & Reentry.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor s degree and one year of experience in a criminal justice or trainingrelated field;
OR
High school or General Educational Development(GED) diploma andfive years of experience in a criminal justice or trainingrelated field;

An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications:
May require General Instructor Certification by the NC Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
