Job Description

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral researcher position within the gammaray astrophysics group in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Bartol Research Institute at the University of Delaware. The appointment is for at least one year with extensions possible subject to performance and availability of funds.

The Delaware gammaray group is a member of the VERITAS and CTAO projects and has played a leading role in the technical and scientific development of these facilities. The candidate will have the opportunity to work with data and Monte Carlo simulations from both projects. They may also contribute to the development of the novel prototype SchwarzchildCouder telescope. Scientific interests of the group are broad and include the study of high energy emission from Galactic sources such as gammaray binary systems supernova remnants and pulsar wind nebulae and the search for counterparts to recently identified ultrahigh energy gammaray sources.

Major responsibilities:

To analyze and interpret data from the VERITAS and CTAO gammaray observatories.
To publish these results in scientific journals and to present them at scientific conferences.
To conduct observations with the VERITAS telescopes in Arizona.
To contribute to software and/or hardware development and to calibration and data quality monitoring.
Review and discuss research plans and details with other members of the research group and colleagues and with the Supervisor.
Prepare materials for assembly into research papers write papers and submit research results to scientific journals; collaborate with other scientists in writing research papers.
Prepare materials for talks posters and other presentations at scientific meetings.
Assist in evaluation and discussion of scientific research conducted by other research groups based on published papers and presentations at meetings.
Assist with formulating and refining research goals within the group.
Assist in supervision of graduate students.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in physics or astronomy is required and the successful applicant is expected to have significant experience with the science and tools of astroparticle physics and multimessenger astronomy.
