Job Description

Position Title:

Systems Control Technician

Job Group:

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Six years of experience in electrical or control trade including apprenticeship; or graduation from a twoyear resident instrumentation and controls program.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of the electrical and mechanical systems (such as switchgear elevator controls shunt trip breakers and fire sprinkler air compressors).
Experience installing maintaining and troubleshooting electronic control systems electrical systems and/or life safety systems (like fire alarms elevators HVAC controls).
Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS) and Life Safety Codes.
Experience interpreting blueprints wiring diagrams and technical schematics.
Experience using diagnostic tools such as multimeters oscilloscopes and specialty testing equipment.
Knowledge of and experience with preventative maintenance programs.
Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) for tracking repairs and maintenance activities.

Iowa State Universitys Facilities Planning and Management Department is seeking skilled candidates for the role of Systems Control Technician. If youre passionate about handson work youll thrive as you install maintain and repair electronic control systems and electrical or life safety devices. Youll also play a key role in ensuring our life safety systems are in top condition performing preventative maintenance diagnostic testing and repairs.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Installs repairs replaces and calibrates complex control system equipment and support systems such as elevator mechanical and various other electrical and electronic systems integrated into life safety systems.
  • Locates problems in systems by monitoring the functioning interpreting multimeter readings and conducting performance tests of elevator mechanical electrical electronic and/or life safety systems.
  • May initiate designs bid documents and purchase orders for supplies and services necessary to develop and maintain complex building equipment and support systems.
  • Meets with engineers shop managers contractors and vendors relative to the complex building management systems and plans.
  • Other duties as assigned by appropriate department or administrative personnel.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and electrical electronic and/or pneumatic schematics and engineering concept statements.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing and to execute oral and written instructions.

Knowledge of hand tools and test equipment such as multimeters oscilloscopes and signal generators.

Knowledge of electrical control and electronic theory.

Ability to lift up to 80 pounds.

Knowledge of applicable electrical codes.

Ability to work in a variety of environments including high places tight places poorly lighted with exposure to dirt dust and fumes.

Knowledge of electrical electronic and/or pneumatic control systems in order to diagnose and safely repair.

Ability to perform mathematical functions.

Ability to map and track wires through color or different identifier.
