Job Description:Seeking per diem substitute school nurse to assist in the districts school health clinics. Under the supervision of the District Nurse Leader and Building Principal the Substitute School Nurse will work together with the fulltime School Nurse in collaboratively developing and delivering safe optimal health care and education in the current setting of COVID19. Traveling between schools and clinics may occur. Qualifications:Currently licensed as a Massachusetts Registered NurseHas a Bachelors degree in NursingHas a minimum of 2 years experience working as a registered nurseHas experience working in pediatrics/school nursing or related setting Current CPR AED certificationAcceptable CORI and federal fingerprinting reportAbility to think critically and react decisively to emergency situationsIs an effective communicator with students families school staff and maintains confidentialityCollaborative & flexiblePreferred:Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) School Nurse licensure preferredReports to: District School Nurse Leader and Building PrincipalJob Responsibilities:Responsible for all facets of the health services. Organizes and implements statemandated programs such as immunization surveillance and screening programs. Provides medically prescribed interventions including medication administration based on state regulations and provides emergency care to students and staff in case of injury or sudden illness. Carries out communicable disease prevention and infection control based on current guidelines. Authorizes exclusion and readmission of students in connection with communicable diseases based on clinical guidelines. Uses computer skills to initiate and maintain computerized cumulative health records on all students. Utilizes community resources for referral of students with unmet health needs including the need for a primary care provider health insurance and dentist. Conducts blood pressure screening for staff at their request. Collaborates with school personnel in establishing and maintaining sanitary conditions in the school buildings. Shares information with other team members about children with special health needs on a needtoknow basis which may affect learning with parental consent. Gives advice on modifications to the educational program to meet the health needs of individual students. Counsels students regarding health issues. Responds to frequently encountered health issues providing counseling and crisis intervention when required. Participates in inservice training programs as required. Reports and provides consultation to parents school personnel physicians clinics and other agencies on school medical matters. Assumes responsibility for continuing own education; obtains expert consultation supervision and peer review as needed.Conducts school programs of immunization physical examinations and sight and hearing testing as directed. Performs technical nursing services as prescribed by a physician and necessary to maintain medically fragile children in the school setting. Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to administer medications appropriately in keeping with school policy/protocol on the administration of medication in the school. Participates in team evaluations and conferences on all children with medical problems.Completes accident reports and maintains a log of health room activity. Acts as a Mandated Reporter (Chapter 119 Section 51A). Complies with NonViolent Crisis Intervention Policy. Other related duties may be assigned by Administration. Special Knowledge/Ability Required for the Position: The position requires the applicant to be proficient in word processing programs. The applicant must possess basic computer skills as well as strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Physical Requirements: The position requires a moderate amount of walking standing sitting and climbing stairs and step stool whenever necessary. The position requires the ability to move quickly from one area of the school to another to assist an ill or injured person in an emergency. Activities also include moderate physical exertion in body movement such as reaching bending twisting grasping pushing and pulling of objects. The position requires lifting objects of twenty 20 pounds on a frequent basis and over twenty 20 pounds occasionally. There is a frequent requirement of ne manipulation associated with the required use of a computer keyboard and calculator. The use of medical equipment is also required. Environmental Conditions: The employee is required to work indoors and occasionally outdoors. The employee may come into contact with medical and/or bodily fluids. May be exposed to sharp objects various levels of noise disagreeable odors agitated and emotionally distraught students and families environmental hazards infectious diseases and chemical agents.
