THE OFFICE OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION IS NOW REQUIRING ALL PARAEDUCATORS TO PROVIDE A COPY OF THEIR HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA AND/OR HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPTS OR GED TO MEET TITLE 1 PART A FEDERAL LAW REQUIREMENTS. PLEASE PROVIDE OUR OFFICE WITH A COPY PRIOR TO BEING THE SELECTED CANDIDATE.

Comments:The job of INTERPRETERASL is done for the purpose of assisting our Deaf ASL teachers and their students by adapting teachers lesson plans to relay necessary information for students to gain subject knowledge. This position will be interpreting for a Deaf ASL teacher in the ASL classroom.

Purpose Statement

The job of Interpreter is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program i.e. certificated staff member and/or students with specific responsibilities for translating a variety of documents and interpreting for functions and meetings; documents to/from target language primarily in support of the education program. Interprets teachers American Sign Language (ASL) for the purpose of relaying necessary information to students in order for them to gain subject knowledge.

This job is distinguished from similar jobs by the following characteristics: CTE.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborates with certificated staff member for the purpose of leading guiding and/or coordinating with students;
  • Interprets spoken language to sign language and reverse for the purpose of enabling students and staff to relay information so that student and teacher can understand one another;
  • Interprets teachers ASL for the purpose of relaying necessary information to students in order for them to gain subject knowledge;
  • Monitors student interactions for the purpose of providing accurate and timely feedback to the classroom teacher;
  • Participates in meetings and trainings for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving the employees skills and knowledge;
  • Provides clerical and general classroom assistance for staff (e.g. collecting and inputting data correspondence copying filing preparing and organizing instructional materials etc. for the purpose of providing general support for classroom activities related to learning goals and objectives;
  • Responsibilities include working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods (e.g. leading guiding coordinating others etc. for the purpose of operating within a defined budget;
  • Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required for the purpose of performing required job functions.

Other Functions:

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform single technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skillbased competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read technical information compose a variety of documents and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledgebased competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: American Sign Language (ASL) or Signing Exact English (SEE).

ABILITY is required to schedule activities; often gather collate and/or classify data; and use jobrelated equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize jobrelated equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific abilitybased competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with others; and maintaining confidentiality.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working with immediate supervision; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the jobs functions.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20 sitting 30 walking 50 standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field is required.

Education (Minimum): Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in jobrelated area with an emphasis in American Sign Language (ASL) or Signing Exact English (SEE) as determined by district based on program need; plus must achieve a score of 3.5 on the performance portion of the Education Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA); or hold Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification and pass the written assessment of the EIPA.
