Search for Vice President for Research and Economic Development

THE SEARCH

Georgia State University (Georgia State or GSU) seeks an experienced and entrepreneurial leader to become the Vice President for Research and Economic Development (VPRED). Founded in 1913 GSU is a public research university within the University System of Georgia and spans six campuses throughout metro Atlanta. The university is powered by more than 5400 fulltime faculty and staff members working across 12 colleges schools institutes and more than 70 research centers. The university community includes more than 50000 students from 158 nations and territories. Georgia State is among the most diverse colleges and universities in the nation* and grants more bachelors degrees to African American students than any other U.S. public or nonprofit higher education institution**.

Georgia State is a dynamic institution that has achieved remarkable milestones in student success and research. Since 2003 the university has increased its fouryear graduation rate by 21.4 percentage points and its sixyear graduation rate by 23 percentage points; eliminated the student achievement gap based on race ethnicity or income; and in the process become a national model for predictive analytics and student success. In 1996 Georgia State University earned a prestigious R1 designation by the Carnegie Foundation and since that time their research expenditures have increased tenfold from less than $20 million to more than $200 million. This rapid expansion lead Georgia State to be named the no. 5 fastestgrowing research institution in the U.S. in 2022.

Reporting directly to the president the VPRED will join GSU at this time of extraordinary growth and energy. In fall 2023 GSU launched its new strategic plan making this the ideal time for a new VPRED to bring their experience energy and drive to set a bold plan to advance GSUs toptier research status. The VPRED will be part of a community that emphasizes collaboration and innovation. The VPRED will guide the Universitys scholarly mission and researchrelated strategic planning and direction; anticipate and promote research opportunities for faculty; uphold an institutional environment that fosters excellence in research creative activity and scholarship; ensure that policies systems and processes are seamless and easy to understand; develop financial strategies that support and benefit research; support the dissemination and commercialization of discoveries; and assure legal compliance with proper and ethical research practices.

The VPRED will represent the University to local regional and national constituencies including federal and other funding agencies. As head of the Office of the Vice President of Research and Economic Development the VPRED will manage resources associated with the Office a budget of $12.2 million and oversee a current team of 13 direct reports and a staff of 125.

The ideal candidate for VPRED will possess keen intellect strong interpersonal and communication skills a tenacity to succeed and the ability to inspire and motivate a highly talented and diverse faculty and staff to continually build and grow the Universitys research portfolio. The VPRED will have an earned doctoral degree relevant administrative and leadership experience coupled with a record of advancing scholarship at a researchintensive university and a record of distinguished scholarship and track record of research activity. Evidence of leadership of a large interdisciplinary university research center(s) or other activities of comparable size scale and complexity is expected. In addition experience in supporting technology transfer commercialization and industry partnerships; a record of infrastructure development with multiple constituencies; and an understanding of the need to develop research interests throughout the University is expected. A keen understanding of federal funding mechanisms advocacy and compliance will be essential.
