Description

Thompson Rivers University (TRU) seeks qualified individuals for our OnCall Auxiliary pool. The OnCall Auxiliary pool of employees provides temporary shortterm support to designated departments within the University to assist with workload requirements temporary leave coverage and during peak periods.

The length of an Auxiliary assignment can vary from one day to up to four months and can be parttime or fulltime hours depending on the departmental requirements.

The Tool Room Technician supports instructors and provides an introduction to various tools equipment and their safe use as required. Some pieces of equipment are physically large and spread out inside and outside the buildings. A Trades Technician supports the instructors at their request in the trades training shop. Typical functions include researching and ordering materials and specialized equipment to the specification identified by instructors. They are responsible for the maintenance of equipment in shops and laboratories. The technician may also provide safety oversight on student lab/shop projects at the instructors request.


MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Researches prepares requisitions for purchases and supplies equipment materials and supplies while following relevant purchasing procedures and ensuring availability in time for classes.
  2. Takes action to replace and return any incorrect or damaged equipment received; completing appropriate documentation.
  3. Transports equipment between teaching facilities which includes large equipment that needs a hitched trailer.
  4. Provides students with appropriate equipment and tools as requested by the student and/or instructor.
  5. Maintains and repairs any equipment that is damaged or operating unsafely and makes recommendations on repairs of equipment that needs to be outsourced.
  6. At the instructors request assists students in following safety procedures to ensure lab/shop projects are completed safely.
  7. Proactively reviews schedule of classes and orders equipment and supplies needed for scheduled classes.
  8. Researches receives quotes for and purchases equipment materials and supplies to specifications at the most economical cost and following Purchasing procedures.
  9. Ensures documents for equipment purchases are appropriately filed. Maintains an inventory of equipment to ensure all equipment approaching end of life cycle is replaced.
  10. Coordinates facility upgrades and maintenance with Facilities and/or external contractors.
  11. Prepares monthly reports on PCard purchases and submits them for approval by Chair and Dean.
  12. Prepares and distributes picture identification/tool tag cards.
  13. Maintains files and records and completes related reports.
  14. Assists in ensuring all equipment shops and labs are kept clean and organized.
  15. Maintains log of all equipment including equipment signed out by students and instructors.
  16. Operates forklift in transportation of heavy equipment and supplies.
  17. Assists instructors in supervising students and their safety in shops and labs as assigned by instructors.
  18. Maintains the inventory of applicable safety gear and daily supplies for the shop and ensures that items are returned for recycling or environmentally disposed.

Requirements

EDUCATION:

  • Grade 12 plus a minimum of oneyear certificate in Certified Trades Training


EXPERIENCE:

  • Three years related experience


SKILLS KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB

  • Knowledge of the BC and Canada Trades Training System
  • Ability to deal effectively with others
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to operate related equipment
  • Valid forklift ticket
  • Ability to operate a personal computer including basic word processing accessing internet information and utilizing email
  • Class 5 license with ability to drive vehicle with equipment loaded on hitched trailer


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Works in toolroom shops and laboratory environment; some counter work with exposure to minor disagreeable conditions
  • Lift objects and tools weighing up to 50 lbs
