Overview

NRDC is a nonprofit environmental advocacy organization. We use law science and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planets wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air clean water and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our people helped write some of Americas bedrock environmental laws including the Clean Water Act and many of the implementing regulations. Today our team of more than 700 lawyers scientists economists policy advocates communications experts and others work across the United States and the globe from our offices in Beijing; Chicago; New Delhi; New York; San Francisco; Santa Monica; and Washington D.C.

NRDC is seeking a Senior Manager to work with the Communications Department in our Washington DC New York City Chicago San Francisco or Santa Monica offices.

Position Summary

Under the guidance of the Senior Director Strategic Communications the Senior Manager Strategic Communications International develops comprehensive communication strategies that advance organizational goals and enhance public engagement for the work led by the international advocacy sector.

This role closely collaborates with and receives lead direction from the Senior Director in order to develop drive launch and measure the impact of a multichannel communications sector plan. This plan will be monitored across earned owned and paid media channels in collaboration with media digital advocacy and fundraising content and creative teams to amplify NRDCs impact thought leadership and drive supporter action.

  • Under the guidance of the Senior Director Strategic Communications develop and execute clear compelling and measurable multichannel communication plans for the assigned sector to reach key target audiences in collaboration with programmatic and communications teams.
  • Create and update messaging and talking points for strategic sector initiatives.
  • Manage the intake and of incoming communications and marketing requests from the assigned sector.
  • Establish ongoing communications priorities and the communications calendar.
  • Develop tactics and approaches to drive audiences from awareness to action.
  • Identify key sector content areas of opportunity that elevate NRDCs visibility and profile.
  • Maintain expertise of relevant priority sector narratives along with audience trends in alignment with policy issues in the U.S. as well as at the global stage level including the key existing and emerging geographies of India China Canada Africa and Mexico.
  • Collaborate with Editorial and Content teams to develop written and visual assets that will resonate with target audiences create compelling story telling and drive relevance for the organization.
  • Vet content with experts from across the institution to ensure accuracy and message alignment.
  • Support the Digital Advocacy and Fundraising team in developing appropriate materials and tactics to promote key messages with NRDC supporters when needed.
  • Work with Earned and Social Media teams to amplify key institutional priorities programs and initiatives.
  • Champion a datadriven approach to evaluate communications efforts and inform future strategies partnering with the Director of Analytics.
  • Work with NRDC leadership to develop and implement executive thought leadership strategies.

Qualifications

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Bachelors and/or masters degree in journalism communications international development advocacy or a related field.
  • 4 or more years relevant experience leading communications campaigns and coordinating communications teams with 7 years total experience in communications journalism international development advocacy or a related field.
  • And/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Developing and rolling out communications campaigns on the ground at international conferences e.g. UN Climate or Biodiversity COPs regional climate weeks CITES.
  • International experience preferred.

  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to thrive in a fastpaced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Familiar with project management tools like Asana.
  • Ability to travel to NRDC U.S. India and China based offices and U.S. and international conferences approximately 1020.

Internal equity will be reviewed and considered to determine a final offer. For this position the salary range is $100000 to $115000.

NRDC operates under a hybrid work model. Employees are required to come to the office 8 days per month.
