Job Description
The Office of Financial Aid is seeking a Financial Aid Counselor who will be responsible for providing counseling services to students parents and university staff on the financial aid processes. They will assume the responsibilities of awarding aid researching and assisting in the resolution of any aid delivery problems conducting financial aid workshops reviewing applications for financial aid awarding students and packaging aid appropriately. This position adheres to all federal state and local laws and regulations governing college recruitment especially those outlined by the universitys accrediting body SACSCOC . PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES : Performs exceptional customer service for students parents employees and external customers. Assist students and parents in completing the FAFSA and obtaining and submitting required documentation. Remain current on all federal/state regulatory requirements and program changes relative to all forms of aid. Establish and maintain accurate auditable records for financial aid programs and student records Understand the verification process as well complete verification. Provide followup to phone calls and emails. Counsels students and parents on eligibility for federal state institutional and external financial aid programs via telephone email and inperson meetings. Serves on University and external committees as assigned. Provides support to other team members as required to ensure the efficient delivery of financial aid services. Uphold the FERPA policy and maintain confidentiality. Attend annual training events to remain up to date regarding state and federal regulations and processes. Understand and assist with resolving conflicting data dependency overrides eligibility issues Responsible for awarding scholarships and athletic awards within compliance Review and process Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeals. Performs other duties as assigned as directed by the Director of Financial Aid. CHARACTERISTICS OF POSITION AND /OR EXPECTATIONS : Knowledge of federal and state financial aid regulations policies and procedures Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and Colleague Excellent communication customer service problemsolving and organizational skills A commitment to the highest level of student service He/she must be goaloriented energetic and capable of working effectively with staff and students Must be able to understand and explain financial aid programs and eligibility criteria and use discernment regarding appropriate next steps as they may be applicable to admitted students and families Ability to travel to secondary schools and community colleges Ability to plan and organize special events and activities Flexible to work on various Saturdays for University sponsored programs BASIC REQUIREMENTS : Strong skills in Microsoft Office software (Word Excel Access and PowerPoint). Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Ability to set priorities and manage multiple highpriority tasks simultaneously. Must be able to work with minimal supervision and initiate and work on projects independently Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail. Ability to maintain the confidentiality of information. Required Qualifications
EDUCATION : Bachelors degree is required with at least two years of experience in financial aid working on College or University campus.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of financial aid legislation (including verification and state requirements) and internal and external reporting requirements and ability to objectively evaluate student aid eligibility in accordance with the applicable guidelines. Experience with software which includes but is not limited to Colleague National Student Loan Data System NSLDS Common Origination and Disbursement COD FAA Access
