Job Description

Grand Valley State University (GVSU) seeks an accomplished and dedicated musician to serve as the University Carillonneur. This prestigious position upholds the rich tradition of the Cook Carillon and the Beckering Family Carillon engaging the university community and enhancing campus culture through regular performances educational outreach and stewardship of the carillon instruments. The University Carillonneur will play an integral role in preserving and advancing the carillon tradition at GVSU.

Primary Duties:

  • Perform regularly scheduled carillon recitals including but not limited to:

    • Regular concerts throughout the academic year

    • Special performances for university events holidays and commemorative occasions

    • Collaboration with student groups faculty and guest musicians

  • Maintain the musical and artistic excellence of the carillon program ensuring a diverse and engaging repertoire.

  • Serve as an ambassador for the universitys carillon tradition by engaging students faculty staff alumni and the broader community.

  • Provide instruction mentorship and support to students interested in learning and performing on the carillon.

  • Coordinate and oversee guest carillonneur performances as part of GVSUs carillon series.

  • Work collaboratively with university leadership and relevant departments to integrate carillon music into broader institutional initiatives.

  • Ensure the maintenance and care of the universitys carillon instruments working with appropriate university personnel and external technicians as needed.

  • Engage in outreach efforts to promote awareness and appreciation of the carillon towers including educational workshops and public lectures.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated excellence as a performing carillonneur with extensive performance experience.

  • Bachelors degree in music carillon performance or a related field.

  • Certification or membership with an accredited carillon organization such as the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (GCNA).

  • Strong understanding of carillon history repertoire and performance practices.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with university stakeholders.

Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • A record of community engagement through musical programming.

  • Masters degree in music or a related discipline.

  • Prior experience as a university or municipal carillonneur.

  • Experience with carillon composition and arranging.

  • Experience in educational outreach and student instruction.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • This position is supported by the University Carillonneur Endowment.

  • Compensation will be commensurate with experience up to $50000 and does not include benefits.

  • Additional professional development opportunities may be available.

If travel allows selected candidates will be invited to campus for an inperson audition where they will present a brief carillon performance to showcase their technical and artistic abilities.
