About the Opportunity

Northeastern University London wishes to appoint an undergraduate Research Assistant to join the multiyear public digital humanities research project Mapping Black London (mappingblacklondon). The appointee will support outreach work between the Mapping Black London project team and schools in the London area with a focus on developing curriculum materials. Begun in 2019 and supported by multiple internal and external research funding Mapping Black Londons goal is use digital tools to recentre and recover the Black presence in the city across several centuries. It is led by CoPrinciple Investigators Professors Nicole N. Aljoe (CSSH) and Olly Ayers (London) and currently has four PhD students two undergraduate Research Assistants and a fulltime Project Manager among a team spread across the Boston and London campuses. Mapping Black London places community outreach and impact at the core of its mission alongside the production of novel research. The new undergraduate Research Assistant will support the team as they deploy the projects innovative digital placebased and experiential approach to Black history in local schools. Students of any disciplinary background are eligible to apply (please see person specification below).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the team in the design of curriculum materials (schemes of work lesson plans workshops and other activities) tailored to specific requirements of different subjects and National Curriculum Key Stages

  • Liaise with external partners to ensure the successful rollout and uptake of new curriculum components including both schools and other nonprofit organizations

  • Help gather evidence of the projects impact and engagement activities

  • Support other engagement activities of the project as needed for example event organization stakeholder engagement and publicity

Person specification criteria

To undertake this role the following should apply should you not have the experience below please highlight where transferrable skills would assist with you undertaking the role.

  • A demonstrable enthusiasm for the aims and objectives of the Mapping Black London project

  • A willingness to work collaboratively across a multigenerational and transatlantic team of researchers

  • Outstanding organizational skills including time management event planning and use of online communication tools

  • Experience of working with young adults and/or digital humanities research tools is desirable but not essential
