POSITION SUMMARY:
The Harrisonburg High School EL Specialist aids the Director of English Learner Programs in monitoring programming at Harrisonburg High School for students identified as English Learners (both active and monitored). The Specialist will provide guidance for placement and services; will facilitate annual testing and progress monitoring; and will collaborate with other stakeholders to ensure that English Learners are receiving the appropriate supports necessary for their success. Additionally the specialist will provide services to identified English Learners at HHS and in our HCPS Support Academies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least 5 years of experience as an ESL teacher with experience teaching in a public school setting
- Experience supporting students with complex/ significant support needs
- In good standing from previous position or division
- ESL teaching License Masters strongly preferred
- Related degrees/endorsements will be considered
- Experience implementing evidencebased interventions
- Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Intermediate level or higher Spanish proficiency preferred
- Effectively demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions.
- Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Familiarity with equity and inclusion frameworks. Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities. Respects the worth dignity and individual differences of others.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in the use of a variety of office/instructional equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office Google Workspace and email.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students teachers administrators and the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Understand and facilitate compliance with all federal and state guidance including progress monitoring annual assessment documentation and use of accommodations.
- Facilitating ACCESS testing
- Completion of/monitoring of accommodation usage forms
- Quarterly monitoring of academic achievement
- Expertise in evidence based practices with a strong understanding of literacy and language development for English Learners (SLIFE LTEL Newcomers Dual Identified)
- Collaboration with ESL team FamilySchool Liaisons School Counseling team and Student Outreach Provider for orientations initial placement progress monitoring and intervention plans
- Collaborate with general education ESL teachers and Instructional Coaches to plan/provide for comprehensive support to identified ELs for both academic and social/emotional success within classrooms
- Collaboration with School Counseling for support of career and academic planning (scheduling)
- Collaborate with Middle School ESL Specialist for high school transition for rising 9th graders including summer school
- Provides direct instructional services to identified English Learners at HHS and at HCPS Support Academies
- Organize and plan for summer programming for identified ELs eligible for language support programming
- Act as school contact for Migrant Education and Church World Service
- Serve as student advocate for EL students within SPED processes including participating in student study/eligibility/iep meetings
- Prepares for and attends Registration Days for opportunity to provide consultation for requests to OptOut
- Participate in professional enrichment to the extent necessary to keep abreast of developments in ESL education and in the field of language development and in literacy for older students
- Plan and facilitate substitute or special testing situations (Work Keys Reading Work Keys Writing Read Alouds)
- Takes all industry standard precautions to protect students staff equipment materials and facilities.
- Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials supplies and skills uptodate.
- Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
- Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
- Maintains confidentiality when appropriate.
- Complies with and supports school division policies regulations procedures and the HCPS Strategic Plan.
- Effectively performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Light work lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students staff and the school community. Regular contact with staff members is required. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
EVALUATION:
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of administrative or licensed personnel.
