JOB SUMMARY

Assists the veterinarian in performing sterilization procedures and other surgeries. Conducts animal health examinations and assists in the treatment of sick or injured animals.

Our highly skilled veterinary technicians play a crucial role in our program working as a team with veterinarians and assistants to provide essential services to the stray pets that need us most. The Salt Lake County Animal Services clinic team provides highquality highvolume spay/neuter; and treatments for illnesses or injuries so that our animals can quickly move to their forever homes. Our technicians build a wide range of skills and youll use your education and license to its full extent while working in surgery and shelter medicine.

Highvolume surgery experience is preferred. This position sets the speed tone and flow of the surgical team ensuring efficiency and cohesion during every procedure. The ideal candidate is a selfstarter capable of critical thinking and working collaboratively with the team to ensure the highest standard of care for every patient.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two 2 years experience as a Vet Assistant or Vet Tech or other closely related field OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

OR

Associates degree from an accredited college or university in Animal Science Veterinary Technology or other closely related field plus one 1 year of related experience; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience. Along with Veterinary Technology certification through the State of Utah or certification must be obtained within six 6 months of hire.

A valid Drivers License recognized by the State of Utah is required to operate a Salt Lake County vehicle at the time of hire.

Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position.

Due to the nature of this position the successful applicant mue subject to random alcohol and drug testing.st pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)

Knowledge of:

Expression of symptoms and/or diseases in animals.

Current infectious disease control methods.

Methods and techniques of humane animal care and handling.

Radiology techniques and safety.

Principles and practices of current veterinary medicine animal care and nutrition.

Reference material related to pharmacology and veterinary treatment techniques.

Aseptic surgical techniques anesthesia techniques and euthanasia techniques.

Skills and Abilities to:

Proficient with animal phlebotomy intravenous catheter placement and subcutaneous intramuscular and intravenous injection.

Calculations of medication dosages and fluid rates.

Recognize a variety of animal species breeds and related behavioral and health characteristics

. Utilize manual dexterity skills and eyehand coordination.

Read interpret and apply disease prevention control and eradication practices.

Safely handle medical instruments and equipment.

Accurately enter data into modern computer applications and write/print legibly.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Position requires standing walking lifting carrying pushing and pulling loads of 10 40 pounds on regular basis and up to 80 pounds on occasion stooping bending squatting and reaching on a frequent basis. Incumbent will be frequently exposed to animals that may bite kick scratch

or be diseased (including rabies) as well as fur dander unpleasant odors loud noises unsanitary conditions dust gases and chemicals. Incumbent will be frequently exposed to blood new and used needles scalpels and other sharp instruments and contaminants
