Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Works under the direction of the Principal Investigator performs some management responsibilities in the research laboratory located in the Inflammation Section of the Division. Duties include supervision of staff activities inventory management maintenance of mouse colonies etc. Independently performs experiments on the role of macrophage activation and epithelial cell function. Participates with the Principal Investigator in the design of experimental protocols. Interprets experimental results in conference with other researchers.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Supervises the operation of the laboratory including supply inventory maximizing the efficient utilization of lab funds and overseeing with PI the activities of other technicians.
2. Assist in orientation and training of new staff and in specialized lab techniques.
3. Independently carries out research projects on the role of lipids in activation of macrophages and function of epithelial cells. Which involves the design and of experimental protocols.
4. Reports on work in progress at weekly seminars and interprets experiment results in conference with other researchers
5. Contributes to scientific literature and may present results at hospital and outside meetings.
6. Responsible for quality control and maintenance of laboratory stock of reagents
7. Responsible for the continual maintenance and updating of the laboratorys mouse colonies
8. Responsible for genotyping and breeding of all mouse colonies.
9. Attends regular meetings of the Principal Investigators to discuss improvements on the general operation of the laboratory and acts upon decisions made.
10. Performs all other duties as required by supervisor.


QUALIFICATIONS:

M.S. required or equivalent
Minimum of 7 years of progressively more responsible research work experience. Prior supervisory experience required.


SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

Must be able to make independent effective decisions in appropriate situations.
Must possess a scientific imagination commensurate with the independent of research projects.
Must have an aptitude of technical problem solving.
Ability to effectively supervise others.
Excellent organizational skills to ensure smooth functioning of lab.
Demonstrated analytical skills and ability to logically sequence experiments to maximize research.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

Normal research laboratory environment.
Limited exposure to human and animal blood products and to hazardous and low level radioactive materials under controlled conditions


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for orienting and training new staff members. Assists Section PI in supervising staff including hiring firing evaluating and disciplining.


FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:

Individual will not be responsible for the budget of the laboratory. However the individual will be responsible for most ordering that occurs within the laboratory as orders pertain to molecular biology.
