Job Description

Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP one of the worlds leading global law firms with more than 4000 lawyers and offices in strategic hubs of commerce law and government across North America Asia Europe and the Middle East is seeking to hire a Patent Draftsperson to join their awardwinning Intellectual Property Practice Group. The Patent Draftsperson will report to the Senior Manager of Patent Support Services assigned to the office in which the Patent Draftsperson sits but will be primarily supervised by a partner in our Philadelphia office and will have daily contact with and receive guidance from all the partners in the practice group for whom this individual provides support. This position will assume significant client responsibilities while providing high quality patent illustration services to domestic and foreign clients.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and draft formal drawings for utility and design patent applications and/or work with attorneys patent agents and additional draftspersons to prepare the same.

  • Collaborate with attorneys patent agents and inventors to understand our clients invention and gather necessary information with proven skills to convert rough hand sketches or photographs engineering drawings and/or 3D CAD models into line art drawings that capture the commercial embodiment as well as provide creative input on capturing potential design arounds.

  • Review and revise patent drawings based on client feedback patent office requirements and examiner requests.

  • Prepare substantive client correspondence and communicate with clients to explain drawing requirements and timelines.

  • Possess good communication and organizational skills to understand clients and internal requests and instructions to manage and prioritize tasks.

  • Maintain uptodate knowledge of patent drawing guidelines.

  • Potentially assist with preparing filing and prosecuting design patent applications before the US Patent and Trademark Office.

  • Engage in practice development activities to build and maintain client relationships.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education & experience:

  • Bachelors degree (or graduate degree) in industrial design product design architecture applied arts graphic design fine/studio arts and/or art education strongly preferred but a degree in related areas will be considered when candidate has proven experience in the field.

  • 2 years experience in patent drafting or similar work.

  • Experience with computer aided software (CAD) and Adobe Illustrator required; experience with patent drawing drafting techniques and software would be a plus.

  • Registered patent agent or desire to sit for the USPTO design patent agent exam a plus.

For positions in Silicon Valley and San Francisco CA the salary range for this position is: $.

For positions in Washington D.C. the salary range for this position is: $72200 $115550.

For positions in Chicago IL the salary range for this position is: $69100 $110500.

For positions in Orange County CA and Seattle WA the salary range for this position is: $75400 $120550.

The base salary wage range for this position will be determined during the interview process and will vary based on multiple factors including but not limited to prior experience relevant expertise current business needs and market factors. Final salary wages offered may be outside of this range based on other reasons and individual circumstances. Additionally salary wages may be only part of the total compensation package. The total compensation package for this position will also include eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus. Subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable plans and policies then in effect eligible employees may enroll in a 401(k) plan as well as participate in Companysponsored medical dental vision life disability accidental death and dismemberment business travel accident insurance plans and health savings and flexible spending accounts for the employee and the employees eligible dependents. Employees will also receive: 9 paid holidays per calendar year 2 personal days per year and up to 20 days of vacation per year. In accordance with state applicable law eligible employees will earn 1 paid sick leave hour for 30 hours worked. Eligible employees may also take up to five days off for bereavement leave up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave per year and up to 10 weeks of paid pregnancy disability leave per pregnancy. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
