Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalency degree required.
Experience in care of animals preferred.

The BFT Research Animal Technician is an entrylevel position that provides husbandry health surveillance and compliancemonitoring to laboratory animals. Responsibilities also include performing equipmentsanitation in CCM animal facilities maintaining husbandry and equipment recordsand supporting the facility teams in daily work as needed. The work schedule isprimarily Monday through Friday 73:30 pm (part time work during thattimeframe or weekends may be considered).While previous experience is preferred this is an entry level positionand training will be provided.

PRINCIPALDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Sanitize and operate animal facility equipmentincluding the use of tunnel washers rack washers acidified watering systemsand autoclaves for sterilization.
  • Assemble caging supplies in a manner thatassures that they remain sterile throughout the handling process.
  • Perform daily work involving the handling ofgenetically engineered animal models animals with immunocompromised healthstatus animals recovering from surgery or other invasive procedures
  • Change cages or pens following aseptic techniqueand assure that animals are not contaminated when outside of their primaryenclosure.
  • Maintain animal rooms (secondary enclosures) andfacility hallways in a clean state so that secondary infections or othercontaminations do not occur.
  • Evaluate animals health each day and reportabnormal clinical signs to the veterinary staff.
  • Perform routine euthanasia on laboratory animalsaccording to the American Veterinary Medical Associations (AVMA) Panel onEuthanasia
  • Use current technology including PDAs and barcode application to record daily cage census.
  • Report facility and environmental issues thatfall outside animal welfare regulatory requirements (as defined in the Guidefor the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals) to the Facility Manager ordesignee.
  • Assist the Facility Manager or his/her designeewith incoming animals and supplies.
  • Work weekends and holidays as assigned.
  • Comply with CCM and MGH policies and standarrating procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
