The Director of Informatics integrates clinical science computer science and information science to manage and communicate data information knowledge and wisdom in nursing and health professions practice. The goal of the Informatics program is to improve the health of populations communities families and individuals by optimizing information management and communication. Informatics activities include the design and use of informatics solutions and/or technology to support all areas of nursing and the health professions. This includes but is not limited to the direct provision of care establishing effective administrative systems managing and delivering educational experiences supporting lifelong learning and supporting nursing and other clinical research. The Director also serves as a catalyst for developing and revising strategic plans that include establishing the direction for largescale technology projects both at the MGH and Partners. The Director develops policies and procedures based on system design workflow reengineering and input from disparate system users. As a member of the Patient Care Services executive team the Director shares the responsibility of providing the organizational direction necessary to effect change and promote excellence for Patient Care Services. The incumbent coordinates with Patient Care Services leadership to ensure effective and optimum utilization of personnel fiscal and material resources.
1.0 Leads or participates in a variety of projects related to the design development and evaluation of information systems and stateofthe art easytouse information tools as a means of supporting clinical practice research and education at the MGH and Partners. Works with project teams that include clinical staff Partners informatics staff application development staff and analysts. This includes managing aspects of projects that relate to business and clinical functional requirements detailed software requirements clinical knowledge integration and consultation for application development.
- Leads project teams in the design selection implementation and evaluation of new MGH and Partners clinical information systems.
- Oversees the management of personnel and activities for applicable components of MGHs information technology systems life cycle including analysis design development selection testing implementation and evaluation of systems that support nursing the health professions and the delivery of consumer care.
- Integrates ergonomics and humancomputer interaction principles into informatics solution design development selection implementation and evaluation.
- Integrates knowledge of current professional practice standards laws and regulations into informatics practice.
- Develops and disseminates standards pertaining to information systems that support the documentation of nursing and health professions practice.
- Advocates for the protection and rights of patients related to the use of their healthcare data and information.
- Develops processes for appropriate patient access to their health information.
- Provides system analysis interpretation and consultation to others.
- Identifies and recommends fiscal material and human resource requirements for informatics projects.
- Keeps informed of new developments in the informatics field to assure that Patient Care Services staff will benefit if such developments can be utilized.
2.0 Personnel Management
- Directs the operations of the Patient Care Services Clinical Informatics department. Has full line responsibility and accountability for management of personnel and fiscal resources.
3.0 Education
- Actively teaches and consults with staff faculty and administrators.
- Qualified candidates will have a clinical license in Massachusetts.
- A Masters degree is required; either Bachelors or Masters degree must be in a clinical area of study (nursing physical or occupational therapy respiratory therapy or speech pathology).
- Appropriate experience in: informatics management business
- Working knowledge and understanding of acute care electronic medical record technology
- Working knowledge of HIPAA CMS TJC federal and state regulations that relate to electronic health recordsthis includes information systems security and technical requirements that are necessary for compliance with these laws and regulations
- An understanding of the benefits of information systems that extends beyond the technology to the improvement and reengineering of clinical processes
- Clinical and administrative systems implementation and project management experience
- Demonstrated high level of written and oral communication skills
- Welldeveloped interpersonal relationship and communication skills
- Advanced knowledge of organizational development systems and change theories and statistics
