Job Description

Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) is a nationally recognized communitybased youth development center with the mission of empowering youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood through comprehensive and innovative programs that address youths social academic and career needs. Each year LAYC works with approximately 5000 children teens and families through a network of youth centers housing programs schoolbased sites and public charter schools that offer a comprehensive set of highquality programs.

LAYCDC AmeriCorps Education program provides the opportunity for those who are considering a career in youth development social service to try their hand in a realworld setting and gain tons of useful skills. AmeriCorps members serve the communities by working as Youth Developers serving elementary middle high schools and young adult youth. LAYCDC AmeriCorps Education Department has 3 AmeriCorps positions; 2 Full Time Positions (Total Contract Hours 900/ MonFri 9am6pm) and 1 Part Time Position (Total Contract Hours 300/ Hours Vary) available that will provide support to our After School Programs and Summer Programs. All positions are slated to end on August 31st 2025.

After School Summer Programs Essential Responsibilities

  • Build mentoring relationships with youth in an outofschool time setting.
  • Provide highly focused academic tutoring.
  • Create and build engaging lesson plans with clear learning objectives and an organized agenda to foster growth and learning in our students in a safe environment.
  • Facilitate enrichment activities according to ageappropriate curriculum and based on your interests of sports art dance cooking etc.
  • Provide wrap around service support to our youth and families.
  • Assist in coordinating and organizing events field trips service project event.
  • Support in the maintenance and upkeep of the After School program environment to ensure a safe environment for students to learn in.

Other Essential Responsibilities

  • Build healthy mentoring relationships with youth and community members.
  • Use Positive Youth Development strategies to help students achieve program outcomes and individual goals.
  • Participate in trainings and certifications on critical aspects of youth development education social services etc.
  • Assist in running social media account of the LAYC DC AmeriCorps program and other social media account in the department.
  • Receive handson supervision to guide you through your learning process.
  • Learn how to collect accurate data to track the effectiveness of our program.
  • Support management of Esras Closet professional clothing closet for the community by conducting inventory processing clothing donations and assisting community members or youth who need to access Esras Closet.
  • As a team members complete a minimum of 2 service projects.
  • As a team members help recruit 60 volunteers for their service projects.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be over 17 years of age or 17 and with parental consent form.
  • Have completed a high school diploma or equivalent OR commit to obtaining a high school diploma or equivalent before the end of contract.
  • Clearances Required to complete MPD FBI State of residence (if not Washington DC) and the National Sex Offender Registry.
  • US Citizen foreign national or lawful permanent resident.
  • Mature responsible and reliable.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective communication skills.
  • Flexible energetic positive individual with commitment to youth development in a high quality respectful environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is largely a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak hear see and lift small objects up to 10 lbs. May require the ability to travel locally and/or regionally.
