GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The BWH Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory serves all of the Partners HealthCare institutions and affiliates (including MGH and DFCI) and handles approximately 8000 specimens per year. The Laboratory performs high complexity Cytogenetic testing that includes chromosome analysis fluorescence insitu hybridization (FISH) studies and microarray analysis.
This individual is responsible for processing and/or performing Cytogenetic analysis for routine STAT and complex cases in order to assess the chromosomal status of an individual. Duties vary by assignment (chromosome FISH and/or microarray analysis) but each requires the technical ability to interpret and analyze results with the highest level of accuracy within strict time constraints (turnaround time). Errors in diagnosis can result in adverse consequences that include loss of life. Individual must record patient information and test results in CytoVision Powerpath and laboratory logbooks with the highest degree of accuracy. Maintain relevant laboratory equipment and follow Standard Operating Procedure protocols for all testing processed and/or performed; troubleshoot problems and discuss necessary modifications with members of senior staff. Individual assists in the orientation and training of rotating fellows residents and students.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
May serve as lead technologist in an area:
Accepts full responsibility for casework assigned from the logging in of the material to the final results as submitted to the Cytogeneticist on service within welldefined time constraints.
The following are characteristic procedures to be covered:
1.Responsible for logging in of samples submitted for Cytogenetic analysis (chromosome FISH and/or microarray) following National Patient Safety Goals. Evaluates clinical data on cases received following the accompanying requisition and determines whether data is sufficient to proceed with culture/analysis: flags cases for contact with the accessioning staff and/or Cytogeneticist on service if more information is required from the clinician. Follows Standard Operating Procedures for samples submitted and notifies senior staff whenever processing samples outside regular protocols.
2.Prepares and/or processes patient samples for chromosome FISH and/or microarray analysis according to established Standard Operating Procedures based on sample type and tests requested by the clinician.
3.Chromosome analysis: initiates and maintains cultures harvests drops slides stains scans slides for the CytoVision GSL and analyzes casework: records counts analyzes metaphases prepares a final karyogram and records the result using current ISCN
4.FISH analysis: prepares slides probes hybridizes washes and scans slides: counts analyzes records and interprets hybridization patterns of selected metaphases and/or interphase nuclei
5.Microarray analysis: isolates labels and hybridizes genomic DNA washes and scans hybridization chips; interprets results using appropriate software
6.Demonstrates the highest level of technical expertise while analyzing patient samples for routine STAT and complex cases and submits test results to Cytogeneticist for final review before clinicians are notified
7.Adheres to the Departments service standards and strives to achieve them: Service Teamwork Communication Respect for Others and Time/Priority Management
8.Maintains a professional appearance at all times
9.Attends and/or participates in weekly/monthly meetings as scheduled; maintains ASCP certification
10.Participates in appropriate CAP proficiency testing
11.Responsible for quality control validation and maintenance of appropriate laboratory equipment supplies/reagents and testing procedures
12.Performs additional duties as directed or assigned
