About the Role
The primary purpose of this position is to increase access to financial counselling services and support for people experiencing financial hardship where mortgage or renting stress is a contributing factor
Services will include:
- Financial counselling advice and education including financial assessment and planning
- Budgeting and financial literacy education
- Debt negotiation and management
- Assistance with applications for financial assistance programs
- Referrals to other Ngwala Willumbong services if required
- Referrals to external services if required
The Financial Counsellor will work closely with our existing teams including our AOD and Mental Health Counsellors to provide holistic support to clients. This will integrate financial counselling with our existing services providing a comprehensive response to the complex needs of our clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop a clear service model and protocols for integrating financial counselling with existing services.
- Develop a client engagement strategy including outreach and marketing activities to promote the service.
- Establish a client feedback mechanism to inform service improvements and increase client satisfaction.
- Offer flexible service delivery options such as telephone or videoconferencing to increase accessibility.
- Establish regular communication and collaboration between other service teams and programs to ensure a seamless client experience.
- To work with creditors to waive or defer debts where reasonable reducing the financial burden on clients and improving their financial stability.
- Provide training and support for existing staff to ensure they understand the financial counselling service and can make effective referrals.
- Develop a comprehensive client management system to collect data that will assist in tracking client progress and report on service outcomes.
- Regularly review and analyse data to inform service improvements and decisionmaking.
- Ensure that services are designed in a culturally aware manner and leverage existing relationships both internally and externally to ensure that multiple referral pathways are developed and maintained.
Skills & Experience
- Ability to engage with people and develop trusting relationships
- Demonstrated knowledge of life pressures faced by disadvantaged people in community
- Demonstrated understanding and knowledge to implement appropriate procedures and strategies to deal with crisis situations
- Strong communication skills
- Analytical abilities to assess financial situations
- Empathy to understand clients challenges
- Negotiation skills to work with creditors
- Knowledge of financial laws and regulations and the ability to create personalized budget plans and debt management strategies.
- Literacy and Numerical Competence
- Advanced Computer Skills including Microsoft Office
- Attention to detail
- Certifications in Financial Counselling and/or relevant experience will be highly regarded
Mandatory Requirements
- Current Victorian Drivers License
- National Police Certificate (no older than 3 months).
- Victorian Employment Working with Children Check
