This position has been designated as intraining; as such WSP will consider filling this position at the Laboratory Tech 1 Laboratory Tech
2 or Laboratory Tech 3 level. The salary range will depend upon at which level the position is filled at and the qualifications of the successful candidate.

About the Position:

This position provides maintenance administrative and quality assurance support to DNA CODIS and other sections of the crime laboratory as needed. The position is under the supervision of a CODIS DNA section supervisor and also takes direction from qualified analysts. The position will help reduce casework backlogs by providing forensic scientists more time to concentrate on sample analysis data interpretation formulating conclusions and report writing. Public safety for the citizens of Washington will be enhanced as the position directly impacts the mission of the Crime Laboratory Division by providing critical underlying support to various aspects of forensic analysis performed by the laboratory.

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Perform and document quality control checks of a wide variety of critical reagents instrumentation and supplies by conducting complex laboratory procedures.

  • Perform and appropriately document DNA extraction quantitation amplification CE detection and data analysis of nonprobative reference materials for quality assurance purposes and evaluate the results of their analysis. Handles biological samples as a part of this duty.

  • Perform and appropriately document instrument and equipment maintenance performance checks sensitivity monitoring and calibration schedules.

  • Prepare reagents and maintains chemical inventories.

  • Maintain access to current chemical SDS records.

  • Plan schedule and coordinate the work of service technicians and engineers for all laboratory equipment. This includes preventative maintenance and instrument/equipment troubleshooting.

Tools and Equipment:
Various instrumentation and tools needed to perform the job (see Relevant Technical Procedures Manuals).

Travel Requirements:
Some travel within and outside the state will be required for court testimony and attendance at meetings and training events. Travel between CLD Labs for scheduled job functions.

Schedule (i.e. hours and days): 40hour work week generally 5 days per week Monday through Friday. Hours may be flexible upon approval of the supervisor/laboratory manager. Laboratory business hours are MondayFriday 8:00 AM 5:00 PM. May be required to work overtime on rush requests or for court testimony.

Work Setting/ Hazards:
The setting is a forensic laboratory where chemical and biological hazards firearms and other hazards may be present.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Must possess a valid unrestricted Washington State Drivers License or able to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
  • Minimum 2 year college degree in biology chemistry lab technology micro or molecular biology.
  • 5 years of experience with 3 years as an LT2. Education can be substituted for experience.
  • Willing to travel throughout the state for job duties meetings training and providing assistance as required.

  • Successful completion of a preemployment polygraph examination and background investigation.
  • Provide an oral DNA sample to be used in the CODIS Elimination Profile Index.
