Founded in 2010 Coach Across America is a national nonprofit organization focused on the power of coaches to transform the lives of our nations most vulnerable youth and the communities they live in through sports. Coach Across America is based on the simple premise that highly trained coaches can be among the most transformative adults in young peoples lives and inspire their success on the field in the classroom and in life. Coach Across America partners with local nonprofits schools and sports organizations to support and train AmeriCorps coaches for a one year service term to work in underserved communities. Our AmeriCorps coaches participate in SportsBased Youth Development training that emphasize the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills needed to help youth reach their full potential.
About Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica
Since 1944 Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica has transformed kids lives in west Los Angeles. For 80 years we have been a pillar in the community filling a vital need. We are a solution for working parents as Club members often spend more time in our programs than in the classroom. By providing essential highquality afterschool programs strategically focused on healthy lifestyles character and leadership and workforce readiness we help kids dream big about their futures.
This position will be based at two sites of Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica the John Adams Middle School (JAMS) location and the Mar Vista Gardens (MVG) location.
- JAMS Club is a dynamic and highenergy program that serves approximately 100 middle school students daily ranging from ages 1014. Our members come from diverse backgrounds and possess varying skill levels in sports.
- Mar Vista Gardens is a standalone Club operating Monday through Friday from 37 pm with occasional Saturday field trips and sports league play. We serve youth aged 618. With an indoor gym ample field space and a futsal court we have the resources to foster community and celebrate character and skill development through diverse physical activities promoting active lifestyles for all members.
We are looking for a half time youth sports coach who will serve an AmeriCorps service term of one year to support the sports programs clinics and play at these two sites. We are seeking an individual with experience working with these age groups and/or a strong interest in engaging with youth at this developmental stage.
Responsibilities will include:
- Providing necessary skills support and coaching to the youth in the program across various sports.
- Overseeing sports activities sometimes with up to 20 students including weekday practices and Saturday games
- Establishing meaningful relationships with members encouraging positive reinforcement creating lesson plans and planning special events are necessary.
- Ensuring a physically and emotionally safe environment for all members at all times is paramount.
- Full participation in activities at the assigned site staff development workshops and trainings.
- Maintaining an active line of sight on members providing guidance and role modeling to athletes and helping resolve conflicts; modeling and enforcing good sportsmanship.
- Connecting with and motivating all participants fostering inclusion and teamwork in both individual and group activities.
- Gaining the respect and trust of the community and youth served.
- Helping expand offerings to appeal to a broader range of youth including the potential to design and implement inclusive highenergy physical activities including intramurals sports clinics workout sessions and fun playbased activities that build Club culture.
- Engaging tweens and teens who may not identify as athletes; encouraging participants to gain and develop life skills knowledge and techniques through sport; implementing lessons learned through training events.
- Performing data collection activities to track Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills growth of the participating youth.
- Understanding the basics of SportsBased Youth Development or willingness to spend time learning more of BGCA youth development curriculum.
- Other duties include supervising groups of kids as well as supporting small group mentoring or light administrative responsibilities.
Requirements
- Desire and ability to work with children including an interest in working with youth who might need a nudge to engage in sports.
- Skills or interest in the following: Track Soccer Basketball Flag football Volleyball Tball Softball Baseball.
- Ability to accept supervision and guidance be adaptable and flexible to changes.
- Good character integrity maturity and ability to model positive attitudes and behavior for teens and tweens.
- Ability to motivate youth and manage behavioral problems.
- Enthusiasm good judgment patience and selfcontrol.
- Interest in civic engagement or history of service/volunteerism.
- Ability to connect sports to leadership development behavior management or SEL.
- Good verbal and communication skills.
- Strong organization and interpersonal skills.
- Be able to maintain a high level of energy.
- Must be able to pass a drug test that includes screening for criminal and driving records investigations and reference checks.
- The job requires the ability to stand for extended periods kneel reach bend and lift objects weighing in excess of 25 lbs. Outdoor work and moderate physically demanding activities may be required on occasion.
AmeriCorps Eligibility & Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- AmeriCorps is open to U.S. citizens nationals or lawful permanent residents.
- Must have or be working towards a High School diploma GED or equivalent.
- Must have access to reliable transportation.
- Successful completion of criminal history background checks.
- Ability to perform all job requirements satisfactorily.
- Other requirements as required.
Coaches must complete the following requirements to ensure successful completion of the AmeriCorps program:
- Completion of the minimum required hours 900 of service and training by the last day of coach contract.
- Completion of biweekly timesheets.
- Attend/participate in Coach Across America orientation trainings meetings service days and special initiatives.
- Must wear Coach Across America branded tshirts with AmeriCorps logo when coaching and at program sessions and events.
Service Dates & Hours:
- Term: One year from start date 900 hours over the service period
- Hours: Average 20 hours per week weekday afternoons during school year from 26 or 37 pm some weekend hours 8 am5 pm weekdays over summer
Living Allowance/Stipend: $12150 total (Paid biweekly)
Education Award: $3697.50 upon completing 900 hours usable for educationrelated expenses.
