Job Title: Special Education Counselor
Reports To: Executive Director of Special Programs

Primary Purpose:
Perform professional psychological work in behavior management and counseling for students with emotional disabilities learning disabilities and behavioral problems. Address the psychological and psychoeducational needs of students referred to and whom qualify for special education services.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Masters degree in counseling
Licensed Professional Counseling (or equivalent) or Licensed Marriage and Family Counseling
Valid Texas School Counselor Certificate Preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of prevention and intervention strategies including behavior management interventions
Knowledge of psychosocial development
Strong consultation skills for conferencing with teachers parents and students
Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Ability to present information in oneonone small group and large group situations to students parents and district staff.
Experience:
Two years experience in providing psychology services in an educational setting

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; instructional equipment
Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing kneeling/squatting bending/stooping Pushing/pulling and twisting Motion: Frequent walking. Maintain emotional control under stress. Regular district wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned; moderate lifting and carrying. Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); occasional physical restraint of students to control behavior. May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities.
