Summary:

The job of LIFEGUARD is responsible for the continuous observation of the pool and its surrounding deck to ensure the safety of all participants. The guard is directly responsible for knowing the rescue procedures emergency action plans recognition of persons in need of help and rendering aid when needed. Lifeguards are on duty at all times that the pool is open and a lifeguard back up is always present. Guards must function proficiently in either role.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ability to scan assigned area every 10 seconds and make contact with any victim in the assigned zone within 20 additional seconds.
  • Ability to understand read and explain pool rules and regulations to patrons.
  • Ability to perform any rescue first aid or CPR that may be needed by patrons or other staff members. Ability to perform lifts of adults out of the water and to submerge to 12 feet and return an adult to the surface.
  • Ability to see hear feel and recognize different types of emergencies including:
  1. Active drowning victims
  2. Passive drowning victims
  3. Distressed swimmers
  4. Spinal/head/neck injuries
  5. First aid situations such as severe bleeding fractures wounds strains/sprains.
  6. Sudden illnesses such as seizure heart attack insulin reaction stroke etc.
  7. Disasters such as fires earthquakes power outages lost/missing persons.
  • Ability to work as a team member in multiple roles supporting other staff members and being a part of a coordinated effort to respond effectively to emergencies and promote safe enjoyment of the pool environment.
  • Ability to recognize and report any mechanical system problems that may create an unsafe or unfit environment for use of the facility.
  • Ability to cope with stressful situations and respond appropriately to complaints uncooperative patrons emergencies and other personalities on staff.
  • Performs cleaning maintenance and cashiering duties.
  • Performs related duties consistent with the scope of the position as described.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Minimum Qualifications

Skills Knowledge and Abilities:
SKILLS are required to perform multiple technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meetchanging job conditions. Specific skillbased competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the jobinclude: operating standard office equipment including utilizing Point of Sale software applications; planning andmanaging multiple projects; and developing effective working relationships.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform review and interpret technical information write summary reports and/or speakpersuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specificknowledgebased competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: human resourcesprocessing and procedures; excellent oral and written communication; organizational and time management; conflictresolution skills; pertinent codes policies regulations and/or laws; current and developing technology.

ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities meetings and/or events; routinely gather collate and/or classifydata; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others ina wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of processes; and operate equipment using avariety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with significant diversity of individuals and/or groups;work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job related equipment. Independent problem solving isrequired to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizationalobjectives; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific abilitybased competencies required tosatisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines andschedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; flexible to changing conditions; making quick and accuratedecisions; working with multiple projects; dealing with frequent interruptions and changing priorities; maintainingconfidentiality; and facilitating communication between person with frequent divergent positions. Must also have theability to attend evening and weekend meetings and trainings.

Working Environment:


The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: some swimming some liftingcarrying pushing and/or pulling; Generally the job requires 50 sitting 25 walking25 standing. This job is usually performed in a sometimes wet generally clean and healthy environment.

Experience:

  • Lifeguard certification
  • First aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer

Required Testing:

  • Lifeguard certification

Clearances:

  • Criminal justice fingerprint/background clearance;
  • Red Cross lifeguard certification first aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.

Continuing Education/Training:

  • CPR recertification annually;
  • Lifeguard recertification every 2 years;

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

The environmental factors described here are representative of those that may be present in the workplace while the employee performs the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions requires the following physical demands: occasional lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping kneeling crouching and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60 sitting 20 walking and 20 standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere.

Clearances:

  • Washington State Patrol and FBI Fingerprint Background Clearance.

Certificates:

  • Valid Washington State Drivers License required (must be able to fulfill all traveling requirements of this position including possessing and maintaining a valid license and automobile insurance when using a personal vehicle for District business).
