Description

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The Anesthesia Medical Directors main responsibilities are planning directing and overseeing the administration of all anesthesia services for GI Anesthesia of Georgia LLC (GIA) at the United Digestive affiliated endoscopy centers. The Anesthesia Medical Director will evaluate the administrative clinical and programmatic needs of the department/organization. Additionally the Anesthesia Medical Director shall have the authority and responsibility for evaluating the quality safety and appropriateness of the anesthesia patient care as part of GIAs quality assurance and performance improvement program. Other responsibilities include personally performing anesthesia care and/or supervising and medically directing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and Certified Anesthesiology Assistants (CAAs) as needed.
REPORTS TO: Chief Medical Officer; Collaborative leadership with Endoscopy Governing Board Chair
ADMINSTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Administrative responsibilities of the Anesthesia Medical Director include:
  • Evaluate the ongoing administrative clinical and programmatic needs of the anesthesia department; required to visit each ASC location once every 6 weeks. Estimated travel: 2 weeks per month.
  • Evaluate and implement anesthesia services policies consistent with recognized standards for anesthesia care including but not limited to:
    • Patient consent
    • Infection control measures
    • Safety practice in all anesthetizing areas
    • Protocol for supportive life functions e.g. cardiac and respiratory emergencies
    • Reporting requirements
    • Documentation requirements
    • Equipment requirements as well as the monitoring inspection testing and maintenance of anesthesia equipment
    • Delineation of pre and postanesthesia staff responsibilities
  • Develop and implement ongoing anesthesia quality assurance program.
  • Assess and prioritize anesthetic risks and develop ways to minimize adverse events.
  • Direct evaluate and report on quality of anesthesia care to the Endoscopy Governing Body.
  • Collaborate with Endoscopy Governing Body on anesthesia prescreening guidelines and patient selection criteria.
  • Assist in development of anesthesia key performance indicators.
  • Assure the patients interests drive performance improvement.
  • Provide input into strategic decisions that affect the anesthesia department and organization.
  • Participate in anesthesia service line budget development and cost containment initiatives.
  • Lead effort in designing appropriate anesthesia staffing models across the organization.
  • Participate in interviews and support recruitment of anesthesia team members.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to anesthesia team members on clinical care and operation items.
  • Work in dyad partnership with Director of Anesthesia Services.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with federal state and accrediting body standards and regulations.
  • Evaluate and implement anesthesia department education training and learning opportunities.
  • Assist in disciplinary action of anesthetists.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical responsibilities of the Anesthesia Medical Director are delineated by his or her clinical privileges and may include:
  • Perform and document the preanesthesia evaluation of the patient.
  • Obtain informed consent for anesthesia and related services.
  • Manage preanesthetic medications and/or treatment.
  • Develop and implement an anesthesia care plan.
  • Select obtain prepare and use equipment standard monitors supplies and for the administration of sedation and anesthesia; perform safety checks as needed.
  • Select order obtain and administer analgesic and anesthetic agents adjuvant accessory or fluids necessary to provide anesthesia services.
  • Perform all aspects of airway management.
  • Facilitate recovery from anesthesia by evaluating patient response and selecting ordering and administering medications or fluids to maintain patient stability during transfer.
  • Initiate and administer postanesthesia pharmacological or fluid support of the cardiovascular system.
  • Initiate and administer respiratory support to ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation in the postanesthesia period.
  • Evaluate the patients response to anesthesia and endoscopy; take appropriate corrective action during the postanesthesia period.
  • Provide postanesthesia evaluation and care.
  • Manage emergency situations by assessing stabilizing and determining disposition of patients including providing airway management administration of emergency and fluids and using basic and advanced cardiac life support techniques.
  • Medically direct/supervise anesthesia services or personal perform cases 10 weeks per year/4 days per month
  • Support patient safety when performing job functions and through participation in company safety and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
    • Take action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
    • Report adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
    • Identify possible risks in processes procedures devices and devise corrective action plan.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Successfully completed a training program in anesthesiology accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) or equivalent organization
  • Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Georgia.
  • Current unrestricted DEA registration (schedules IIIV) or no history of revocation of DEA registration (schedules IIIV) within the past five years.
  • Permanent certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) or current recertification within the time interval required by the ABA.
  • Compliance with the ABA Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program (MOCA).
  • Compliance with relevant state or institutional requirements for CME.
  • Demonstration of competence in advanced life support.
  • Minimum of five years anesthesia experience; prior Anesthesia Medical Director or Chief of Anesthesia role a plus.
  • Agreement in writing to abide by the ASA Guidelines for the Ethical Practice of Anesthesiology (Approved by the ASA House of Delegates on October 15 2003 last amended on December 13 2020. .
ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Ability and desire to lead and foster relationships among the anesthesia team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skill are required to effectively collaborate with various clinical staff and healthcare team
  • Ability to resolve conflict and escalated issues arising from operations and coordinate with other departments and organization leaders
  • Ability to interact with team members patients physicians and visitors with courtesy and respect
  • Ability to operate use and interpret data from a wide variety of equipment to perform anesthesia care
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patient population
  • Ability to implement and adhere to company policies and procedures
  • Ability to perform clinically as an anesthesiologist in the endoscopy setting

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
  • Participates in departmental meetings.
  • Participates in onsite medical staff meetings and onsite quarterly Endoscopy Governing Body meetings.
  • Seeks ongoing professional educational growth.
  • Participates in required educational programs and net learning.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
Ability to work under stress. Moderate periods of sitting and computer use. Good visual acuity. Ability to stoop kneel crouch and/or crawl. Ability to reach grasp use fine finger movement and feel sensation to discern temperature texture size and shape. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 25 pounds. Monthly onsite visits to endoscopy center locations required. Other travel may be required as business needs dictate.
