GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the supervision of the Principal the Health Informatics Teacher is responsible for instructing students in the principles of health informatics integrating medical knowledge with information technology to prepare students for careers in the rapidly growing healthcare and IT sectors.
MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and implement engaging lesson plans aligned with Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) CTE competencies for Health Informatics.
- Teach students the fundamentals of electronic health records (EHR) health data management medical coding privacy regulations (HIPAA) and healthcare technology applications.
- Incorporate realworld applications industryrelevant software and handson learning experiences into instruction.
- Prepare students for industryrecognized certifications such as the Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS) or other relevant credentials.
- Collaborate with local healthcare and technology professionals to provide workbased learning opportunities including internships and job shadowing experiences.
- Assess and monitor student performance through projects exams and practical applications.
- Stay current with industry trends and integrate the latest technology and best practices into the curriculum.
- Maintain a safe supportive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement and professional growth.
- Participate in school and divisionwide professional development opportunities staff meetings and CTE advisory board discussions.
- Communicate effectively with students parents and school administration regarding student progress and career pathway opportunities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelors degree in Health Informatics Health Information Management Nursing Computer Science or a related field.
- Industry experience in health informatics medical coding healthcare IT or a related area.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Virginia teaching license in Health and Medical Sciences or Career and Technical Education (CTE) or eligibility to obtain one.
- Experience in secondary education workforce training or instructional design.
- Industryrecognized certifications such as Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS).
- Familiarity with workbased learning strategies and partnerships with local healthcare providers.
- Experience with learning management systems (LMS) and technologyenhanced instruction.

WORKING CONDITIONS and PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work environment is inside a classroom but could include outside activities with moderate noise temperatures that are controlled but can be subject to outside temperatures and no exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements. The work is light work requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
