Academic Services for Athletes connects to the Universitys mission and that of the Student Learning Center by providing holistic advising from orientation to graduation for Appalachian State Universitys Division I studentathletes. The services provided allow and encourage students to develop necessary academic/life skills in areas such as time management personal accountability collaboration and goal setting. The program assists students in balancing demands of academics and athletics in a college environment. Academic Services for Athletes is committed to assisting students as they develop as leaders in the classroom in their sport on campus and in the community. Academic Services for Student Athletes is committed to providing accuracy in the information regarding curricula and degree requirements university policies and compliance to NCAA required eligibility standards and bylaws. Duties & Responsibilities include: Participate as an integral part of the Student Learning Center (S.L.C. in providing support services to student athletes. Provide academic and career advising to student athletes for specific teams on a fulltime 12 month contract. Serve as a mentor and resource to student athletes and make appropriate referrals as needed. Assist with orientation for all new student athletes in their case load. Demonstrate commitment to and compliance with the Universitys and Department of Athletics policies and procedures as well as the Sun Belt conference and NCAA constitutions bylaws legislation and regulations. Assist assigned sport coaches in providing academic information to prospective students and their parents and with on campus recruiting efforts. Establish and maintain collegial respectful relationships with colleagues students parents and families. Keep current on NCAA eligibility standards monitor student athlete eligibility and communicate eligibility requirements with students and coaches. Keep accurate records of student contacts documents student visits for accountability purposes and maintain confidentiality. Maintain currency on curricular and policy changes that affect advising services to student athletes. Assist with data collection for reports including Academic Progress rate Graduation Success rate and Annual Report. Attend monthly compliance meetings with team Administrators Compliance and coaching staff. Serve as the Assistant to Orientation for Student Athletes. Maintain positive working relationships with faculty coaches and administrators and serve as an advocate for student athletes and serve as a liaison between the Student Learning Center and Athletics. Work closely with other staff members of the S.L.C. to meet the academic needs of students in caseload including tutoring learning skills and other academic support. Monitor all students in the caseload who are on academic probation. Represent Academic Services for Student Athletes ASA on various committees and Universityrelated functions. Assist with special projects as deemed appropriate by the Director. Position requires some evening and weekend work. All advisors are expected to stay abreast of university academic policies and procedures and the Department of Athletics policies and procedures as well. Evaluation Competencies: StudentCentered Advising Skills: Advisor demonstrates skills that create a positive advising session: listening flexibility patience receptivity and responsiveness. Advisor is consistently available to meet with students via appointments and walkins including students whose advisor is unavailable. Adherence to work schedule: Advisor works 40 hours each week except on holidays vacation and sick days. Advisor maintains a reasonably detailed calendar indicating appointments and clearly communicates with supervisor about scheduling requesting days off etc. Professional Contributions and Development: Advisor seeks to improve skills and effectiveness as a professional. Advisor presents and participates in meetings and conferences beyond the office and attends appropriate and relevant workshops and professional development opportunities. Continuing advisors: attend training and professional development sessions scheduled for all academic advisors during the summer and academic year as well as the monthly sessions on advising updates and issues. Interpersonal Skills: Advisor demonstrates ability to collaborate and communicate effectively and respectfully with colleagues supervisors students and parents. Technological skills appropriate for performance of job duties: Uses technology in an appropriate and professional manner and stays current with advising and orientation technology (Banner: Internet Native and Faculty Self Services Portal DegreeWorks JumpForward Early Registration Advising MapWorks Slate OneNote etc..
Minimum Qualifications
Masters degree from an accredited institution Experience working with students in a college setting and a demonstrated commitment to the educational development of students

1 year of studentathlete academic support work experience
