A DAY IN THE LIFE:

The Senior Manager Software Engineering (Pump) plays a pivotal role in our mission to deliver cuttingedge solutions for diabetes management. The senior manager will lead a team or multiple teams of software engineers responsible for developing pump functionality which may include integrations with internal or external partners. This is a high impact role that requires technical expertise leadership skills working cross functionally with technical product management project management system and other departments necessary to produce safety critical features. You will have accountability for the overall performance and results of software teams within the software department. You will contribute to high level planning and will evaluate the results of research and development projects to assure accomplishment of technical objectives. This position is open to both local (San Diego) and remote employees!

Team Leadership:

  • Leads and inspires a team of software engineers fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.
  • Sets clear annual goals and expectations and provides mentorship and guidance to team members.
  • Conducts performance evaluations offers constructive feedback and promotes professional growth.
  • Provides appropriate merit recommendations and promotion candidacy for all eligible team members.
  • Works collaboratively with software management to achieve team goals and company objectives.

Software Development:

  • Manages teams that plan design and develop software for Tandem Insulin pumps.
  • Collaborates with crossfunctional teams including hardware mobile and quality assurance to ensure seamless interoperability.
  • Oversees the technical architecture ensures effective crossproject collaboration and facilitates relationships between the team and peers.

Project Management:

  • Collaborates with project managers on project timelines resource allocation and budgets to meet project goals and deadlines.
  • Fits teams product deliverables into the product road map along with applicable technical initiatives
  • Identifies risks and proactively develops mitigation strategies.
  • Monitors and reports on project progress to stakeholders.

Quality Assurance:

  • Maintains a focus on software quality regulatory compliance and best practices.
  • Oversees testing validation and verification activities to ensure the reliability and accuracy of software development.
  • Promotes a culture of quality and regulatory compliance within the software engineering team.
  • Organizes training programs and workshops to educate team members on relevant quality standards regulations and best practices.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensures that all software components meet regulatory requirements such as FDA guidelines IEC standards and ISO standards.
  • Assists in the preparation of documentation for regulatory submissions.
  • Ensures compliance with company policies including Privacy/HIPAA and other legal and regulatory requirements.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Drives process improvements and the adoption of agile methodologies to enhance team efficiency and product quality.
  • Promotes a culture of continuous learning and innovation within the engineering team.
  • Works with senior leadership to determine long term product skill and organizational needs.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

YOURE AWESOME AT:

  • Strong background in software development; medical device or healthcare industry experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with embedded hardware platforms (STM32 nRF or similar) and RTOS environments (FreeRTOS SafeRTOS Zephyr uCOS or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with communication protocols like BLE USB NFC SPI etc.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements including FDA IEC and ISO standards.
  • Familiarity with FDA regulations and medical device software development standards preferred.
  • Skilled in utilizing modern AI tools in software development strongly preferred.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience in managing and mentoring software engineering teams.
  • Ability to think strategically and make datadriven decisions.
  • Excellent communication interpersonal and collaboration skills to work with crossfunctional teams.
  • Skilled at effectively communicating department or area issues and results within and across functional areas and conducting presentations of technical information concerning specific projects or timelines. Able to gain cooperation from others.
  • Skilled at effectively leading a cooperative team effort and organizing resources to achieve team goals. Able to make and prioritize process and resource decisions based on overall team needs.

EXTRA AWESOME:

  • Bachelors degree in software engineering Computer Science Biomedical Engineering or related field or combination of equivalent education and years of applicable work experience.
  • Advanced coursework/masters in software engineering MBA professional license or certificate preferred.
  • 10 years of software development experience combining:
  • Management experience leading a software engineering team.
  • Product life cycle experience.
  • Medical device industry or related area strongly preferred.
  • Less experience required if directly related to insulin pump device.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

The starting base pay range for this position is $200000 $220000 annually. Base pay will vary based on jobrelated knowledge skills experience and may also fluctuate depending on candidates location and the overall job market. In addition to base pay Tandem offers a competitive compensation package that includes bonus equity and a robust benefits package.

Tandem offers health care benefits such as medical dental vision health savings accounts and flexible saving accounts.
