Job Description

The Position


Note: Must Currently Hold Permanent Employment Status with Sacramento County.

Sheriffs Sergeants supervise sworn and/or nonsworn personnel; ensures work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures investigates cases where criminal action is involved or suspected and executes and serves civil processes and orders.

Employment Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Successful completion of the Sacramento County Sheriffs Office POST accredited formal field training program;

AND

Four years fulltime paid experience in the class of Deputy Sheriff in Sacramento County service.

Note:Either of the following qualifications may be substituted for one year of the required experience:

  • Possession of a bachelors degree or higher from a recognized college or university or
  • Two years of experience as a sworn officer in a law enforcement agency of a city or county in the State of California.

Note:If the word experience is referenced in the minimum qualifications it means fulltime paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Parttime paid experience may be accumulated and prorated to meet the total experience requirements.

Note:If the minimum qualifications include an educational or certificate/license requirement applicants must submit proof of requirements with the application. GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

Compliance with Government Code: Incumbents appointed to this class shall meet the minimum standards set forth in California Government Code Section 1031.

POST Requirement: Successful completion of a POST certified Supervisory course is required within 12 months from the date of appointment. Incumbents in this class are required to maintain Continued Professional Training (CPT) in accordance with POST regulations.

Criminal History and Background Checks: The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for this class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors Resolution No. 82602 Personnel Policies and applicable federal and state laws. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidates ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of accessing criminal history information the candidate will be fingerprinted. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained.

The County may also conduct a background check on the candidate prior to appointment to a position within this class. The background check may include personal and professional reference checks credit history checks where authorized by Labor Code section 1024.5 Social Security Number verification professional license/registration verification military service information and driving history. Information obtained in the course of this background check will be considered by the appointing authority in the selection process. In obtaining such information the County will comply with applicable consent and disclosure practices in the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act.

The background check including Computerized Voice Stress Analyzer (CVSA) examination and psychological and physical examinations shall be conducted according to POST specifications. Pursuant to CA Government Code Section 1029 the conviction of a felony is grounds for disqualification from an appointment except if the individual has been granted a full and unconditional pardon for the felony.

License Requirement: A valid California Driver License Class C or higher shall be required at the time of appointment. Failure to obtain or maintain the appropriate California Driver License or comply with state and federal requirements for utilization may constitute cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rules or applicable bargaining agreement. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to disability will be reviewed on a casebycase basis. Employees in this class who as a part of their regularly assigned duties are required to operate a motor vehicle may be enrolled in the DMV Pull Notice Program.

Physical Requirements: Positions in this class require the incumbent to:

  • Be able to meet medical standards as prescribed by POST and detailed in the POST Medical Screening Manual.
  • Possess sufficient physical ability to perform the full scope and functions of a Peace Officer per Government Code 1031 (f).
    • Usual and customary duties shall include all the requirements specified in Government Code Section 1031 including but not limited to the ability to frequently use physical force to restrain defend against or arrest uncooperative/combative persons drag lift a 160 pound person and to be able to run jump and climb in emergency situations.
  • Achieve a minimum standard in the use of a firearm.

a casebycase basis.

Working Conditions: Positions in this class require the incumbent to:

  • Work various shifts to provide 247 coverage including nights weekends and holidays.
  • Work outside in all types of climatic conditions including inclement or very hot weather.
  • Be exposed to hazardous situations such as exposure to explosives physically violent individuals and contagious pathogens.
  • Wear and maintain a designated Sacramento Sheriffs Office uniform including department issued safety equipment such as duty/gun belt ballistic vest etc.

The probationary period for this classification istwelve 12months

Applicants will be automatically logged out if they have not submitted their applications and all documentation prior to 5:00 p.m. on the final filing date.
  • The supplemental questions are designed to elicit specific information regarding a candidates experience education and training. Responses should be consistent with the information on your application and are subject to verification.

WRITTEN EXAM (Weighted 30 of Final Score)

The Written Exam portion of the testing process will be scored at 30 of the final exam score.Candidates must attend the Written Exam to be included in the subsequent steps of the testing process. The Written Exam test dimensions include:

  • Legal issues and corrections procedures
  • General and operations orders
  • Human resources and labor agreements
  • General law enforcement tactics health and safety codes
  • Supervision and progressive discipline
  • Situational Judgment

Qualified applicants will be notified by email of the exact date time and location of the examination which is tentatively scheduled forthe week of May 5 2025. Candidates may also access the exam invite notice within their governmentjobs inbox. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications that have not received a written notice by email at least two 2 working days prior to the tentative test date should contact the County of Sacramento Employment Services Division at. For more information on testing dates and/or accommodation requests please contact the Employment Services Division by the final filing date.

Note: The Sheriffs team will be administering the exam on behalf of the County of Sacramento Employment Services Division.


FORMULA RATE EXAM(Weighted 70 of Final Exam Score)

All candidates who have successfully passed the Written Examination will progress in the examination process to the Formula Rate Examination.

This examination will evaluate the relevance level recency progression and quality of candidates education training and experience. The candidates application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore the candidatesresponses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough detailed and complete.

All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their governmentjobs inbox. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test scores attained from the examinations.
