The leadership of the new Computational Philosophy Lab at NU London are seeking two research assistants in relation to their work with a particular focus on AI ethics. The successful applicants will be advanced (upper year undergraduate or masters level) students interested in AI and data ethics with some technical proficiency that enables them to implement researchled design decisions taken whether on digital infrastructure (RA1 or on data collection and analysis (RA2. They will be capable of working independently and collaboratively and of working flexibly in response to agreed deadlines.
Duties and Responsibilities
The two research assistants (RAs) will have slightly different responsibilities as follows.
First AI Ethics Research Assistantship: Digital Infrastructure
The leadership of the new Computational Philosophy Lab at NU London are seeking an assistant who will in the first instance develop a website describing the activities and personnel of the Lab e.g. under Director Balls sites.northeastern account and link it
to the PolyGraphs project site (updating the latter as appropriate) as well as other digital resources (such as CPL partner NULabs resources the Human and Network Sciences Jupyter book and public facing Canvas page etc..
The RA will also support research about and development of the digital infrastructure needed to support the AI ethics activities of the Lab and its partners under the Conversations on AI initiative. Conversations is a crosssectoral and interdisciplinary discussion forum for stakeholders in the responsible AI ecosystem in London and beyond that hosts quarterly in person events. Working with the research assistant we plan to find and begin to implement the digital infrastructure needed to support this forum. This will initially comprise interactive web facilities including both the capacity to advertise our inperson events and to house ongoing discussion between participants outside of those quarterly meetings. Thereafter further infrastructure may also be considered e.g. automated transcription services content capture and broadcasting etc. Accessibility security and responsible data management will be significant considerations in the design and implementation.
Second AI Ethics Research Assistantship: Event Management and Data Analysis
The leadership of the new Computational Philosophy Lab at NU London propose to hire a research assistant to help us and Annabel Gillard and Tracy Woods who coorganize Conversations on AI with (a) event management and (b) data analysis. Responsibilities under (a) event management include: liaising and managing communications with speakers venue and attendees; stage managing the event ensuring appropriate refreshments furniture and technology is available and setup; and supporting the Conversations team on the close out of the event with reporting and summary including a financial statement. As regards (b) data analysis: we are looking for support in working out how best to (responsibly) capture and analyze data from our participatory events (including the June event) and our actively engaged stakeholders in the periods between events to yield insights on the responsible AI topics we discuss. This will involve e.g. survey/questionnaire design as well as technological implementation at the Innovation event and the visualization or other representation of the findings to feed back to our stakeholders.
Person specification criteria
To undertake this role the following should apply should you not have the experience below please do highlight where transferrable skills would assist with you undertaking the role.
Experience: some familiarity with events management data collection and analysis and/or digital infrastructure for collaborative work would be an asset
Knowledge Skills and Abilities: some technical proficiency (e.g. building websites and/or analysing data); familiarity with concepts relevant to AI and data ethics
Education Qualifications and Training: advanced (undergraduate or graduate) study at the intersection of digital technology and philosophy/ethics
Personal Attributes: eagerness to contribute to research efforts at the intersection of philosophy and computing
