Ozark School District

Dyslexia Specialist/RTI Coordinator

Contract: Licensed 210 days 1.0 FTE

Reports To: Superintendent/Curriculum Coordinator

Position Purpose

A Dyslexia Specialist/RTI Coordinator leads district efforts in identifying students who qualify for dyslexia intervention services as well as those students who need a multitiered system of support. A Dyslexia Specialist/RTI Coordinator also ensures knowledge of and district compliance with all requirements of ACT 1268.

Essential Functions

  • Assist schools in making programming decisions for students who qualify for dyslexia services or tiered support services
  • Oversee the administration and data collection of universal screeners and assessments for students in grades K12
  • Support teachers in grades K12 in determining when to refer a student for diagnostic assessment to support learning needs
  • Administer and score Level II screening and provide a written report of the Level II screening results and recommendations
  • Meet with parents and school designee regarding the recommendations of the report
  • Support teachers with implementation recommendations from Level II screeners and psychology reports for intervention and in the classrooms
  • Review dyslexia assessment completed by outside agencies to determine if further testing is warranted and meet with parents and school designee regarding district programming recommendations
  • Provide ongoing training and support for staff who provide dyslexia and other intervention services
  • Provide ongoing training in effective literacy programs and instructional strategies to staff
  • Provide support and information for parents
  • Assist staff in the proper use of progress monitoring data and the interpretation of data in order to plan instructional supports
  • Ensure the screening of students receiving dyslexia intervention services who are not making adequate progress and/or need additional supports in the classroom
  • Train and support interventionists and teachers including special education staff in researchbased intervention programs determined appropriate for each level (Sonday Heggerty Barton)
  • Serve as a liaison between services from general education to special education
  • Ensure proper documentation of Dyslexia Intervention Services
  • Provide RTI support to K12 campuses

Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Curriculum Coordinator Superintendent or Superintendents designee.

Equipment

Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers printers copy and fax machines and telephone.

Travel Requirements

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge Skills and Mental Ability

A deep and broad knowledge of literacy and dyslexia research

Evidence of successful leadership in instruction at a grade level building level or district level

Experience in conducting staff professional development

Experience in mentoring/coaching other teachers

Evidence of success in working with adult learners

Evidence of strong interpersonal skills

Evidence of strong written communication and presentation skills

Evidence of strong planning and organizational skills

Experience in working with students who have characteristics of dyslexia

A strong commitment to team collaboration through Professional Learning Communities

Working Conditions

Maintain emotional control under stress

Frequent interruptions

Frequent districtwide travel with occasional travel outside school boundaries

Deadline driven workload

Works in standard office and school building environments

Frequent contact with parents community and/or other district/campus employees

Daily attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job

Job Qualifications

Valid Arkansas Teaching License

Bachelors degree in Education from an accredited college or university

Masters Degree in Reading (preferred)

CALT certification (preferred)

Endorsement #527 Dyslexia (preferred)

Certification in Dyslexia Therapy Training Program (defined by ADE)

Experience

Four 4 years minimum of successful teaching experience

Teaching experience at more than one level (preferred)
