About the Protection Service
Our mission is to enhance security develop alternative modes of transportation ensure respect for the rights of the university community and protect the assets of the University and its community.

Position Purpose:
Responsible for the safety and security of the University community and its visitors on a 24hour / 7day basis. This position also requires the operation and monitoring of surveillance and security systems that support security staff on patrol while ensuring that all pertinent information is transmitted to all appropriate members of the community civic authorities and the Protection Services team.

The incumbent will be required to work 8hour shifts including evenings and weekends.

There are two 2 permanent positions available.

In this role your responsibilities will include:

  • Emergency Dispatching: Receives and responds to all campuses emergency calls and describes safety instruction and appropriate responses. Escalates to other parties when required. Monitors and is aware of the risk of Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear Explosive (CBRNE) situations that pose serious life safety risks for all campus community members and the surrounding neighbourhood. Provides procedures for each type of emergency and has the ability to position the cameras (over 1000 on site) in time to provide adequate response to life safety situations. Equivalent to 911 and 24/7 for campus medical and mental health emergencies with specialized knowledge of campus and its hazards. Obtains vital information on suspicious dangerous or criminal activity. Activates emergency response teams and notifies city emergency services when requested and followups with 911 when required.

  • Communications Centre Operations: Actively and attentively Mmonitors all alarm points and CCTV surveillance on all three main campuses in all University owned buildings. Monitors and operates a multiline telephone system as well as a digital twoway radio system for all security staff. Documents all incidents complaints and requests to allow for immediate and appropriate action. Provides Communication Centre training to all new Dispatchers Security Guards and students employees. Analyzes daily report entries and logs them into the cost recovery system. Conducts computer searches in various databases for report history and information on key holders parking permit holders contract cleaning personnel employees and students. Issues keys to authorized persons and followsup with campus partners for the accuracy of key issuing. Monitors and responds to multiple 24/ 7 email addresses.

  • Customer Service: Provides information advice assistance and superior customer service at all times to the University community and its visitors. Acts as an Ambassador for the University. Confirms and verifies access for all University staff students and contractors after hours. Assists in determining resolutions should conflicts occur.

What you will bring:

  • A PostSecondary degree or diploma in security or other specialization relevant to the position or a combination of education training and/or work experience.

  • A minimum of one to three 13 years of related work experience.

  • Certification for First Aid and CPR Level C.

  • Training and experience in emergency dispatching.

  • Knowledge of emergency response protocols and guidelines.

  • Knowledge of (CBRNE) procedures and emergency protocols is an asset.

  • Ability to multi task and work under pressure.

  • Excellent leadership qualities judgment and decisionmaking ability.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely and relay details accurately.

  • Takes initiative and is assertive when required.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to listen understand and respond appropriately.

  • Ability to work alone with minimal supervision and/or in a team environment.

  • Demonstrates tact diplomacy and is sensitive to cultural diversity of the community when dealing with students faculty employees and visitors.

  • Respects the confidentiality of the position and demonstrates discretion.

  • Protects client confidentiality and human rights.

  • Must be willing and able to work shifts including evenings weekends and overnights.

  • Experience using Windows Office Suite and various other computer systems

  • The candidate shall not have any convictions for which a pardon has not been granted and shall not have any record of offences related to the job.

  • Bilingualism French and English (spoken and written).

The rating is determined by a proficiency test designed by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute.

Prior to May 1 2022 the University required all students faculty staff and visitors (including contractors) to be fully vaccinated against Covid19 as defined in Policy 129 Covid19 Vaccination. This policy was suspended effective May 1 2022 but may be reinstated at any point in the future depending on public health guidelines and the recommendations of experts.
