The Hertie School is offering a threeyear scholarship for an exceptional candidate to pursue a fulltime PhD in the field of Fundamental Rights starting from September 2025. The successful PhD candidate will be affiliated with Hertie Schools Centre for Fundamental Rights starting in September 2025.
The deadline for application is 31 January 2025 11:59 pm CET.The reference letters must be submitted no later than 15 February 2025.
At the Hertie School PhD candidates undertake doctoral research in the social sciences in an international and multidisciplinary setting. To find answers to todays social political legal and economic challenges our doctoral researchers work with distinguished scholars.

We invite PhD candidates with exceptionally strong academic track records at undergraduate and masters level (or equivalent) in human rights or related fields particularly with academic backgrounds in law politics or related disciplines with strong demonstrated interest in research of human rights theories law policy and institutions.
Research proposals should focus on contemporary and emerging challenges to the protection of fundamental rights in domestic regional and/or global governance. We welcome proposals that address the efficacy of human rights at all levels with a preference for those focusing on the impact of climate change economic inequalities war and armed conflict digital technologies migration and forced displacement and the effects of political polarization and the raise of authoritarianism.
All methodological approaches including sociolegal criticaltheoretical empirical and doctrinal are welcome.
Candidates will be supervised by the incoming Director of the Centre and have an opportunity to join a vibrant diverse and multidisciplinary community of scholars. Enquiries should be addressed to the Centre Manager Dr Michal Kramer.
