Description

The Philadelphia School (TPS) is seeking a fulltime 10month Dean of Student Life for grades 48 starting at the beginning of the next academic year. We are a Preschool Grade 8 progressive independent school located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania with an enrollment of 412 students. Since our founding in 1972 The Philadelphia School has grown in size complexity and diversity. This growth has been rooted firmly in the progressive values with which our founders began: immersive learning responsive pedagogy and meaningful engagement with the world.

The Philadelphia School seeks individuals with a deep interest in progressive pedagogy social justice placebased learning and who demonstrate a commitment to personal and professional growth. We hire experienced educators who have excellent classroom management and communication skills as well as a flexible approach to teaming. All of our faculty and staff build respectful and supportive relationships with their students develop strong homeschool partnerships with parents and caregivers participate in school wide initiatives and work closely with their supervisors to develop their craft. Our faculty and staff have strong interpersonal and communication skills. They are grounded in the practices of progressive education with a demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity and social justice as well as environmental education. All of our faculty and staff bring a rich range of interests and expertise to their work.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Meet regularly with the Division Director and School Psychologist; collaborate with the Learning Resources Team to coordinate support of individual and group socialemotional and behavioral needs
  • Play a key role in encouraging the establishment of schoolwide expectations and agreements; support positive consistent routines and practices in behavior management using Responsive Classroom structures as a framework for classroom community
  • Establish regular presence in classrooms to support both proactive and reactive approaches to student needs
  • Plan implement and facilitate classroombased socialemotional lessons around selfimage selfregulation friendship problemsolving and conflict management in partnership with gradelevel teams and School Psychologist
  • Support and facilitate student conflict resolution
  • Cofacilitate our sexuality education curriculum; periodically assess the appropriateness and effectiveness of this curriculum in partnership with the School Psychologist and other members of the TPS faculty
  • Facilitate cocurricular programming for grades 48 such as assemblies overnight trips and special events
  • Support New Student Orientation program

Qualifications:

  • Ability and commitment to create a warm nurturing and supportive environment for 914 year old children. A deep understanding of the developmental stages and needs of students at this age is essential
  • B.A. required; Masters Degree in education counseling social work or a related field of study preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity Equity Inclusion and Belonging as integral to the curriculum and community experience
  • Experience in student life programming socialemotional learning and conflict resolution; we understand that this experience can come from a wide variety of contexts
  • Training in or proven experience with Responsive Classroom and Restorative Practices; Our Whole Lives Curriculum a plus
  • Strong organizational and problemsolving skills with the ability to manage multiple programs and initiatives and adapt flexibly to the changing needs of the community
  • Strong writing editing and communication skills at the team student and family levels
  • Demonstrated proficiency with integrating technology
