Job Description

Summary


Position Summary

This position promotes efficient highquality clinical practice by providing guidance through collaborating with the team to manage patient flow and communication. The Neurology Technician will prepare patients for procedures use specialized equipment to perform neurophysiologic studies collect data and prepare preliminary testing reports under general physician supervision while following established policies and procedures. This position delivers safe and appropriate patient care within the scope of practice and established policies and procedures under the direct clinical support and supervision of a licensed professional.

Essential Duties

  1. Assists with preparing patients for examination and may obtain patient medical history by accurately taking vital signs (temperature pulse respirations blood pressure height and weight) and documents the results in appropriate systems and/or EMR. May review medication list. May perform spirometry and/or other preappointment testing and documents the results appropriately.
  2. Explains the nerve conduction studies (NCS) test procedure to the patient to obtain the patients cooperation necessary for a complete examination.
  3. Prepares procedure rooms for patients and ensures EMG equipment is in working order. Conducts inventory to ensure the necessary supplies are on hand and restocks exam rooms on a daily basis.
  4. Measures electrical activity in peripheral nerves using appropriate electromyograph instruments for use by physician in diagnosing neuromuscular disorders.
  5. Accurately obtains common NCSs; distinguishes between normal and abnormal results; describes all abnormal clinical manifestations observed during the test; and recognizes physiological and nonphysiological artifacts and takes appropriate steps to eliminate.
  6. Performs clinical skills as guided by competency validation.
  7. Implements plan for each clinic ahead of time to identify and anticipate potential clinic flow problems; monitors master schedule; resolves unexpected patient flow issues.
  8. Coordinates telephone communication with patients families referring providers and other members of the health team; utilize followup system to assure care followup and coordination is accomplished; tasking by utilizing scripted call backs relaying messages from the clinical licensed professional.
  9. Responsible for administrative function to support clinic: manual billing error correction data entry photocopying prior authorizations answering unit/clinic phone taking phone messages faxing and obtaining records.
  10. Provides and documents appropriate education to patients/families utilizing effective teaching skills scripted teaches and the National Jewish supportive materials as directed by a licensed clinical professional.

Other Duties

  1. May collect and correctly label lab specimens utilizing the correct collection procedure from patients. May prepare specimens for analysis by centrifugation separating specimens from red cells and other techniques required for distribution of the sample to the appropriate area.
  2. May assist the physician in the performance of more complex specialized procedures as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Education: High school diploma/GED and successful graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  2. Work Experience: One year of experience as a Medical Assistant or equivalent in a healthcare organization or medical office required. Electromyography (EMG) and autonomic testing experience preferred.
  3. Special Training Certification or Licensure: CPR/BLS required.American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists certification preferred.

Salary Range: $21.00 $26.00
