Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Provides care and maintenance to park grounds and vegetation. Responsible for planting trimming fertilizing and applying pesticides to trees shrubs turf and flowers.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Horticulture Specialist

Direct Reports: Seasonal Employees

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The listed examples of work are not intended to be allinclusive. They may be modified with additions deletions or changes as necessary.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plants trims fertilizes and applies pesticides to trees shrubs turf and flowers.
  • Assists in identifying various plant diseases or insect pests and assists in determining the appropriate cultural chemical or preventative measures necessary.
  • Provides technical assistance to other City staff and citizens in the identification of insects and plant diseases proper pruning trimming and planting techniques along with other methods of plant care.
  • Applies both restricted and general use pesticides as directed by federal and local regulations.
  • Assists with the removal and pruning of dead diseased or decaying trees.
  • Designs flower beds and other landscapes.
  • Repairs and maintains all park related equipment as needed.
  • Operates light equipment and tools common to tree care pruning and tree removal activities. Utilizes specialized equipment for horticulture including: tree pruners chain saws tree spade stump grinder fertilizer spreaders seeder boom truck bucket truck backhoe loader dump truck tractors sprayers top dresser and chipper.
  • Operates snow removal equipment including snowplows ATVs and tractor plows during the offseason on an asneeded basis.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervises the work of seasonal employees on special projects or assignments.
  • Assists with the Volunteer Flower Garden Program.
  • Designs and installs landscape related construction projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and required.
  • This position may potentially require weekend holiday and evening work.

PREPARATION AND TRAINING

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Associates Degree or higher in horticulture forestry or turf grass preferred.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in horticulture and/or park maintenance

Certifications and/or Licensures

  • Colorado Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicators License in Turf and Ornamental within 1 year of employment
  • Required Drivers License: Colorado Class R

An equivalent combination of education training and relevant job experience may be substituted.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge

Working knowledge of:

  • Maintenance equipment
  • Soils and environmental factors
  • Annuals perennials trees shrubs and turf grass
  • Landscape maintenance of woody plants annuals and turf grass
  • Pesticide regulations and application
  • Tree pruning and arboriculture

Basic knowledge of:

  • Park maintenance
  • Horticultural practices

Skills and Abilities

Computer Skills Basic computer skills required to maintain daily reports.

Communication Skills Advanced customer service skills required to address the questions and complaints of the public.

Analytical Skills Advanced analytical skills required to diagnose and troubleshoot horticultural problems.

Mechanical Skills Advanced mechanical skills required to use the tools needed for completion of daily tasks and for maintaining and repairing equipment.

    • Must be able to operate a bucket truck and all landscape arboriculture and general maintenance equipment.

Project Management Skills Basic project management skills required to plan and execute long term projects. Also required to establish work schedule for assigned seasonal employees.

Mathematical Skills Advanced skills required to calibrate sprayers and spreaders. Also required to calculate areas and estimate materials needed.

HOURLY PAYRATE

$22.31 $33.47/Hourly Rate

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed primarily outside. Works near moving mechanical parts; exposed to fumes airborne particles and various chemicals some of which may be toxic. The employee is exposed to various weather conditions including wet hot and cold conditions.
