What Does the Department of Community Justice Do
The Juvenile Department embedded in the Department of Community Justice serves youth ages 1218 who are alleged to have committed what would be considered a crime if they were an adult. We work with the Juvenile Courts and supervise the youth placed on formal probation. We also have a unit that works with youth who have been diverted from the formal court process to be addressed informally by the Juvenile Department.
Our mission is community safety through positive change. We build meaningful relationships with youth to influence and encourage positive behavior changes while holding them accountable to their court orders and probation conditions. We support youth experiencing difficulties in their lives by connecting them to resources and community based organizations. The youth with whom we work are often facing challenges and barriers that impact their ability to be successful in the traditional mainstream activities of their peers. Our youth often struggle with mental health unstable living situations behavior regulation lack of parental support and or supervision school attendance and substance use issues to name a few of the barriers we see.
Internship Description & Responsibilities:
The intern will become familiar with Adjudication (Court process) of formal delinquency petitions (Charges) and learn skills for supervising justice involved youth in the community.
Intern will be trained how to perform the following responsibilities in this role:
Assessing the risk youth pose to the safety of the community and victims.
Supervising youth on release conditions from the court.
Gathering social and family history to identify natural supports service needs protective factors and risk domains.
Accompanying JCCs (Juvenile Court Counselors) on supervision visits in the community.
Accompanying JCCs to deliver summons to youth and families.
Learning Outcomes:
Develop trauma informed and culturally sensitive interviewing skills
Gain skills in verbal deescalation and intervention techniques
Understanding of court process and terminology for Juvenile Justice
Understanding of collaboration between the Courts System Partners and Community Based Organizations.
Minimum Qualifications and Education:
Candidates should have completed within one year or enrolled in a college/university academic institution.
